Responsibilities

The department is responsible to build, grow and protect Mayo Clinic’s reputation in a way that shapes the external environment and nurtures the culture to help achieve the mission of the organization. Department functions consist of reputation management including thought leadership and issues/crisis response; client communications and engagement programs; staff engagement; content and channels; community engagement; strategy and insights; communications services.

The manager understands Mayo Clinic business objectives and priorities and leads the development of strategies to support those objectives. The manager partners with other department leaders to execute operational goals, prioritize work, ensure effective and efficient operations, maintain high standards for service excellence and identifies opportunities for continuous improvement. Develops and maintains relationships with Mayo Clinic executive leadership, staff and members of the local and national government and/or media to advance organizational awareness and achievements.

The manager is primarily responsible for the management of staff and/or programs and leveraging functional expertise. May serve enterprise and site leadership needs through participation on committees, task forces and workgroups.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and execute internal communications strategies supporting Mayo Clinic’s key people strategies, ensuring alignment with workforce objectives and overarching business needs.

  • Provide communications oversight, messaging alignment and execution of priority Human Resource (HR) and People and Culture Committee (PCC) driven initiatives.

  • Provide communications consultation to Mayo Clinic, HR and PCC leaders.

  • Maintain a strategic personal portfolio, owning and driving key communications strategies, providing consultation, and executing tactics when needed. Collaborative partnerships with other teams and departments to advance complex, matrixed strategies is a must.

  • Work cross-functionally to develop outcomes-based goals and report measurable results to leaders at multiple levels, including partnership with People Analytics to leverage employee data in communications planning and recommendations.

  • Serve as point for development and implementation on Communications Department culture and engagement strategies, connecting them to overarching people strategies and workforce goals; partner with HR to create standards for a consistent shared service approach to engagement and experience.

  • Directly or indirectly manage staff, directing day-to-day assignments. This may include performing administrative requirements, conducting performance reviews, and providing ongoing support, mentoring and coaching.

  • Represent the team and stand in for other managers and/or directors when needed.

Qualifications

Requires a bachelor's degree in a related field plus 5 years of relevant work experience

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to communicate in a way that creates clarity, simplifies messages, and aligns with organizational strategy. Knowledge of channels for communication and the ability to build effective communication and engagement strategies.

  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to independently identify opportunities, solutions and resolve challenges.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver impactful results.

  • Requires an attitude that actively seeks out change, embraces critical questioning, innovation, service and continuous improvement.

  • Must understand how to deal with and navigate ambiguity, and act without having the total picture.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to include presentation, negotiation, persuasion, team facilitation, constructive feedback and written communications skills are required.

  • Superior project management experience, knowledge and skills must be demonstrated.

  • Incumbent must have the ability to independently manage a varied workload of projects with multiple priorities.

  • Demonstrates interest in continuous learning and professional development, in addition to functional area expertise.

Schedule Details

M-F, business hours. This position may work remotely part-time and will be required to work on campus as business needs dictate. Must be located within a reasonable driving distance of either the Rochester, MN campus or the Phoenix, AZ campus for on-site requirements.

Weekends and evenings as needed.
