Position description

The Legal Specialist is responsible for initiating and producing complex work at a high level of competence in one or more areas of law in support of attorneys and/or clients. Work product is self-directed and requires significant independent judgment and discretion. Advanced knowledge and understanding of practice areas, processes, procedures, rules and regulations is required. The specific duties of the Legal Specialist may vary based on department needs. Subject Matter areas may include but are not limited to general health law; business/corporate/transactions; fraud and abuse; estate and trust planning, probate and tax matters. Tax law matters include application of federal income, gift and estate tax deductions impacting individuals as well as exempt tax matters impacting charitable entities. The Legal Specialist provides leadership and is considered and expert in one or more areas of law; educates and updates clients/departments on specific legal topic; and may take the lead on significant projects. The Legal Specialist in this position will have a primary focus on legal matters affecting Mayo Clinic charitable activities and fundraising including supporting the business approach to philanthropy through the Corporate and Foundations Relations team. The Legal Specialist will be expected to perform complex legal research on matter related to fraud, abuse and waste, probate and estate matter disputes and mediations, among others. Health law regulatory work experience is strongly preferred. The individual hired into this role will support our Office of Development.

*This position is a combination of remote and onsite support work. Individual must live within driving distance of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will meet one of the following education requirements: a four-year degree and a paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA) certified program; a bachelor’s degree from an ABA-approved paralegal educational program; or a J.D. degree. Five years of relevant legal experience required. A J.D. degree may be substituted for required experience. A bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of relevant legal experience, including at least 3 years of senior-level paralegal experience, may be substituted for all previously-noted requirements.

License or certification

Completion of PACE (Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam), other professional designations (advanced certification in specific practice area), or a Master's degree preferred. Completion of the Mayo Clinic Project Management Course or equivalent preferred.

Compensation Detail

Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approximately $3019.20, based on a full-time position.
