Responsibilities

The Cancer Center research administrator occupies a unique leadership role within Mayo Clinic and specifically the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. One of the successes of Mayo Clinic has been the collegiality and mutual support demonstrated by physician and administrative leadership in the care of cancer patients, the pursuit of innovation and translation through all cancer research and the commitment to cancer education. This partnership brings together clinical, research and managerial talents necessary to achieve the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center strategic and operating plan. The administrative and physician/scientist leadership roles cannot be separated. The purpose of the partnership is to: translate the institutional Cancer Center vision to meaningful and effective operational responses to all Cancer Center research activities including SPOREs, governance of basic science, translational science and population science programs, and administration of the Cancer Center Support Grant as well as significant (P01, P50) grant applications. The position brings an institutional perspective to daily cancer research decisions and an operational perspective and experience back to the institution. The position incumbent will initiate and organize opportunities to improve service and quality and act as a catalyst for realizing these improvements; act as a facilitator, champion and generator of new ideas and a mediator on difficult issues; bring awareness of current external issues such as grant availability, compliance, quality, legislative, and reporting needs, assist physician/scientist and allied health staff in developing leadership, managerial skills and succession planning; have adequate knowledge and perspective of Mayo Clinic and business operations to know when and where to acquire additional input and expertise; provide financial oversight of Cancer research activity and work collaboratively with the Cancer Center practice and education administrative partners. Mayo Clinic is designated as a NCI Cancer Center at the Phoenix, Jacksonville and Rochester campus.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business, health care administration or related field required.

  • Five years healthcare management or related industry experience to include people, projects or programs required.

  • Operational experience must include demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment with physician, scientist, educator, administrative, supervisory, and allied health staff.

  • Must have demonstrated leadership competencies management (e.g. staff, change, complex issues) and operations.

  • The successful incumbent will have experience with large NIH and NCI funded research grants, including both writing and administering grants in academic institutions.

  • Prior experience leading clinical trial operations including leading quality and compliance operations is preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience with Cancer research processes, publications and academic activities specific to Cancer Centers is also preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills required.

  • For Operations Administrators hired prior to March 2012, a minimum education requirement is a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred.

  • Incumbents may be expected to rotate through a variety of clinical department or division assignments with the duration of the rotation usually lasting 3-6 years.
