These positions are located in the Design/Project Development in Rochester. The positions will work full-time during the summer and part-time during the school year, based on students' availability and the needs of the department. Teleworking is available.

Some examples of work for this position are listed below, but not limited to the following:

  • Assists the Design Squad Leader in preparing plans, layouts, pay item quantity calculations, and other Design deliverables in accordance with MnDOT & CADD data standards to meet scheduled deadlines.

  • Assists design lead in preparing final design construction plans.

  • Assists and prepare basic horizontal and vertical alignment calculations and prepare typical sections.

  • Assists in searching, locating and retrieving previous plan information from district filing systems so that information is made available for plan preparation.

  • Assists in the preparation of pay item quantities, tabulations, and assembling standard plan sheets.

  • Assists in the preparation of professional and accurate project documentation to meet MnDOT standards as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidate must be currently enrolled or enrolling within three months as a full-time student (six semester/9 quarter credits) in a Civil Engineering Technology or CADD Program with a GPA of at least 2.0

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Microsoft Excel and Word.

  • Ability to understand technical documents and follow instructions.

  • Valid Class D Driver’s License.

  • Must be 18 years old or older.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience using Open Roads Designer, MicroStation & GEOPAK, or similar CADD software.

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Civil Engineering Technology or CADD Program or related with a GPA of at least 3.0 position.

  • Experience in the Design functional area.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work inside an office or laboratory, or outside exposed to the weather elements (both cold and hot). The employee is regularly required to sit; use wrists, hands, and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talks or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. The employee will occasionally drive a motor vehicle in off road conditions. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven/sloping ground. The employee may work in high volume traffic zones in day and nighttime conditions. The employee will operate machinery and testing equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee will occasionally move up to 10 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. Periodically, the employee will push and/or pull carts, dollies and two-wheel trucks. The employee must be able and willing to wear and/or use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
