Responsibilities

The Anatomical Services Assistant is responsible for the preparation of cadaveric material and surgical environments for educational and research activities conducted in the Anatomy and Procedural Skills Laboratories and other approved Mayo locations. This includes procuring, embalming, harvesting, labeling, transportation, accounting-auditing, storage, care, reclamation, final disposition and proper record keeping of human specimens, ensuring that the cadaveric material is treated with dignity and respect while in our care. This position will be able to work independently in the role as a course facilitator for a variety of users of the laboratory. Supports and facilitates educational sessions in the Anatomy and Procedural Skills Laboratory for users but in particular for the surgical and surgical subspecialty departments as well as during Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses held by all groups. The anatomical services assistant will need to be sensitive and compassionate while assisting with the coordination of the Anatomical Bequest to Mayo Clinic program. This includes professionally interacting with patients, donor families and health care providers when communicating the intricacies of the donor program, verbal screening of potential donors with health care professionals, evaluating donor acceptance, advising family members of donation options, negotiating transportation needs with funeral service colleagues and treating each donation with respect, dignity and as a valued Mayo resource. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in science, preferably in Mortuary science or surgical services. Minimum of 2 years experience working in surgery or with cadaveric material is required.Must be able to work independently in a highly confidential area. Must be computer literate. General background of Anatomy is preferred. Valid driver’s license required. Current Minnesota Funeral Directors Licensure preferred.
