Adjunct College Laboratory Technician - Nursing Department GENERAL DUTIES Performs highly-skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework. Job Title Name: Adjunct College Laboratory Technician CONTRACT TITLE Adjunct College Laboratory Technician FLSA Non-exempt CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION The laboratory technician in the nursing department has the primary responsibility of working in activities that directly support the functioning of the Nursing laboratories with the primary focus on technical assistance to nursing students in the practical application of nursing laboratory practices to reinforce formal classroom training previously provided by faculty. The position requires nursing experience, with an emphasis on nursing skills, and collaboration with nursing faculty to promote student clinical objectives. Essential Duties and Responsibilities -Assist with and set up for skills lab, practice sessions and simulation; assist with clean up, storage of supplies and equipment to maintain a clean organized skill lab environment -Operate and maintain simulation/skills equipment, recognizing when equipment is malfunctioning -Assist nursing faculty to implement the skills laboratory curriculum. This includes the use of a variety of patient care equipment and supplies, use of computer based instruction tools and programs. -Assist with simulation activities in the Nursing Simulation Lab with low and high fidelity mannequins. Lift mannequins and equipment as needed. -Observes and assists students in procedures such as, but not limited to, the preparation and administration of oral medications in the laboratory setting; vital sign technique; IV administration; Foley catheter administration, isolation precautions, etc. -Supervise students in the lab and assist students with skills acquisition related to identified clinical deficiencies. Oversee student use of equipment during laboratory sessions and assist students by answering routine questions regarding use of equipment and safe performance of nursing procedures. -Cooperate and collaborate with professional nursing faculty in a community college setting -Prepare equipment for instructor demonstration, student practice, and evaluation. -Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. -Remain current in the areas of best practice techniques or evidenced-based practice in nursing care. -Remain current in the areas of standard precautions. Ensure that safety requirements are in place and faculty and students follow safe procedures. -Relate successfully with students and staff of diverse cultural, social or educational backgrounds. Please note: Instruction may involve daytime, evening, and weekend labs. Work hours per week and schedule may vary depending upon student, lab, and clinical lab needs. An employee in this position acts as a resource person to provide students with simulated measurement of nursing skills utilizing format prepared by nursing faculty of the college. Although this position involves individualized assistance to students, it involves no instructional aspects, curriculum development, preparation of lesson plans or grading of students. These instructional functions are provided by nursing curriculum faculty members. The work is performed under general supervision of a Senior College Nursing Laboratory Technician. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years' experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Current NYS Registered Nurse licensure Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing Prior employment in a medical hospital or lab Ability to lift up to 50 pounds without accommodation One-year experience in a Nursing Skills & Simulation Laboratory One-year experience in a student-centered environment Experience working with faculty or administrators relative to students? needs Experience with simulation activities in a simulation lab Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community COMPENSATION $ 31.22 -$33.76 per hour.
