Southern Ohio Medical Center Nursing Assistant in Portsmouth, Ohio


  • Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Hospice Nursing Assistant's primary job function is to perform delegated nursing tasks assigned by the registered nurse, performing selected technical support activities and assisting the registered nurse and licensed practical nurse to perform specific nursing activities. Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Education:

  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

  • Ability to read, write and speak English required

  • Completion of an approved nursing assistant program or equivalent experience required

  • Licensure:

  • BLS within 90 days of hire required

  • Experience:

  • Approximately six months prior experience in either the acute, long term care or community based care setting preferred.

  • Interpersonal Skills:

  • Necessary in order to interact with patients, families, nursing staff, physicians and other members of the health care team in a courteous, respectful manner.

  • Essential Technical/Motor Skills:

  • Hand/eye coordination to perform basic patient care activities.

  • Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Physical demand level is heavy. Occasionally lifts in excess of 100 pounds and frequently lifts 50-100 pounds when transferring and positioning patients. Stands or walks with regular breaks four to six hours per day when providing supportive services and basic nursing procedures. Sits for one to three hours per day when documenting patient care. Ability to use hands for repetitive simple grasping, fine manipulation and pushing and pulling when attending to a patient's physical needs, operating patient care equipment and assisting patients with personal hygiene. Occasionally bends, squats, climbs, crawls and reaches above shoulder level.

  • Essential Mental Requirements:

  • Has occasional contact with the general public and customer when relating to patients' families and customers when performing nursing care. Must be able to cope when occasionally working under close supervision and without the assistance of other personnel. Requires the ability to occasionally adapt to deadlines and irregular activity schedules and pays close attention to detail.

  • Essential Sensory Requirements:

  • Good vision is required when performing job duties such as taking temperatures and weights, feeding and ambulating patients and observing patients. The ability to communicate clearly is continuously required when interacting with patients, visitors, physicians and reporting to team leader/charge nurse the treatment results, observations, patient complaints and other pertinent information regarding the condition of the patient.

  • Exposure to Hazards:

  • Normal patient care environment with occasional exposure to dust and odors. Occasional exposure to body fluids, unpleasant patient care activities, infectious diseases, and toxic substances due to the performance of certain patient care activities. Sharp instruments and moving machinery are occasionally used in attending to patient needs. Frequently exposed to noise due to job requirements.

  • Performs basic patient care activities.

  • Observes patients and reports unusual conditions and/or reactions to the registered nurse.

  • Assists with admissions, discharges and transfers of patients.

  • Answers call lights and responds to patient needs.

  • Maintains patient environment and performs routine cleaning tasks in nursing unit/patient rooms.

  • Completes clinical record documentation per policy.

  • Participates in in-services, department meetings, and workshops to advance knowledge and skill.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
