Who we’re looking for

The Product Litigation Department of the Toyota Legal One (TL1) General Counsel’s Office is looking for a passionate, earnest, and highly motivated Paralegal.

The primary responsibility of this role is to support the investigation and defense of product-related lawsuits and claims involving Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles in North America.

The person in this role will report to a Managing Counsel and support up to two in-house product litigation defense attorneys with oversight of matters in which claimants allege personal injuries or property damage involving the performance of Toyota vehicles.

This position is based in Plano, Texas. The selected candidate will be expected to reside within commutable distance of this location. Relocation assistance is not approved for this position.

What you’ll be doing

  • Investigation/assembly of company records, preparation of discovery documents, and responses and assistance in locating company witnesses and information to help defend the litigation matters.

  • Communication and collaboration with other Toyota affiliates and parent corporation staff for purposes of discovery, case status reporting, advising on important litigation developments, and identifying relevant information, records and witnesses to defend litigation (such as vehicle design and manufacturing documents and data).

  • Implementing litigation holds for preservation of relevant company documents and records.

  • Managing internal and court-imposed deadlines as well as TL1 record keeping and reporting requirements to ( i.e. , TREAD Act and Medicare reporting requirements).

  • Reviewing and auditing invoices for fees and costs incurred in defense of matters.

  • Managing TL1 case related databases.

  • Monitoring and responding to correspondence.

  • Functioning effectively as part of the product law team, including maintaining effective and efficient communication among team members.

  • Work with engineers and outside counsel on technical issues.

  • Projects, as assigned.

What you bring

  • Paralegal certificate (ABA-certified legal assistant program) or equivalent professional work experience.

  • Extensive law firm or corporate law department experience either in product liability lawsuits and/or regulatory fields (safety, environmental, privacy, customs/trade, antitrust).

  • Excellent case management skills.

  • Proficiency in law department matter management systems, document management systems.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Self-starter with attention to detail, skilled in problem solving, detailed-oriented, strong analytical and organizational skills.

  • Superior interpersonal, diplomacy, and client relationship skills.

  • Optimistic attitude and respect for Toyota employees and Toyota products.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership/personal responsibility for performing tasks and resolving issues.
