This position is moving to OPG Corporate Headquarters: In Summer 2025, OPG will officially welcome employees to our new Corporate Headquarters located at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario. This new space will enable teamwork, collaboration and innovation that will help us to achieve our mission to electrify life in one generation . This position will be temporarily based in Pickering, Ontario until the move to Headquarters in the Summer of 2025.

JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Senior Manager Environment and Climate Change.

Reporting to the Director of Environment and Climate Change, this position is responsible to provide technical expertise, policy direction and information products related to the management of climate change including mitigation activities, adaptation to climate change, and OPG’s biodiversity program. The successful candidate will require strong collaboration skills to work with numerous internal business units to coordinate and align on climate change related activities. The Senior Manager – Environment and Climate Change will provide direction and oversight on the development and implementation of internal governance and processes related to climate change and sustainability and scoping requirements to grow these programs within OPG. This position supports various projects within OPG including Indigenous Relations and experience working with Indigenous Nations and communities on topics related to climate and biodiversity would be an asset.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate strong working knowledge of climate change related science or economics and policy ideally through both training and application as well as experience in leadership roles

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

JOB DUTIES

  • To manage resources and assets involved in the planning, organizing, monitoring and controlling of assigned projects for strategic environmental initiatives. The scope includes internal and external initiatives that support OPG's business objectives.

  • Manage programs, establish relationships and support the Director and VP, as appropriate, as the point of contact on environmental matters for climate change mitigation, environmental stewardship, sustainable development, and strategic environmental initiatives.

  • Support maintenance and advancement of an ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System for OPG.

  • Establish and maintain the governance and training framework for the OPG Environment and Climate Change function.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and cross functional teams with internal and external stakeholders to identify and advance strategic Environment and Climate Change initiatives.

  • Prepare and present, as appropriate, reports for OPG senior management and Board of Directors to fulfil due diligence requirements and report in on strategic initiatives.

  • Prepare and present environmental reports for communications with external audiences.

  • Supervise staff and initiate recommendations on personnel matters.

  • Support the Director and VP, as appropriate, to ensure that environment and climate change requirements are being met consistent with OPG's corporate policies, EMS and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Support the Director and VP, as appropriate, in fulfilling corporate-wide environment and climate change accountabilities by fulfilling accountabilities assigned, working collaboratively within the environment function and across operational and corporate functions.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and cross functional teams with stakeholders at facilities, within OPG, and external to OPG.

  • Work collaboratively with operations staff, functional support groups, utility partners, suppliers, contractors, and/or other stakeholders to identify, scope, and develop projects that support OPG's strategic environmental initiatives.

  • Work with Stakeholder Relations to establish and maintain federal and provincial relationships to advance strategic initiatives.

  • Establish and implement communication vehicles to communicate environmental developments and requirements to the facilities.

  • Advise of any emerging issues likely to adversely affect project performance and/or having environmental, public health and safety, legal or business reputation implications.

  • Arrange for and ensure that work assigned to contractors is completed in accordance with project scope, terms and conditions.

  • Determine requirements, design and produce environmental reports for internal and external audiences.

  • Implement and adapt the governance framework to respond to changing compliance obligations and identify areas for improvement.

  • Oversee the design and development of training and awareness OPG Environment, Engineering and Projects staff related to it’s Climate Change and Biodiversity programs. This includes but is not limited to the scientific basis for climate change, adaptation practice and mitigation of climate change.

  • Communicate implications of significant changes or new requirements to impacted groups within OPG.

  • Meet and report year-end projection requirements of budget/performance achievement plan and other issues of significance.

  • Prepare business cases and budgets and secure resources to accomplish objectives for corporate environment programs and strategic environmental initiatives.

  • Monitor actual versus budgeted expenditures and be accountable for all controllable expenses and variances with budget.

  • Ensure projects comply with schedule, cost, scope and performance aspects as outlined in approved business case.

  • Recommending organizational design to facilitate the execution of work programs.

  • Provide advice on application of corporate environment and climate change policies and support as required.

  • Participate in the establishment of programs that address (existing and future) environmental compliance obligations.

  • Manage human resources capability for staff within the function.

  • Assign tasks to staff and ensure tasks are completed according to specified requirements.

  • Other Duties as Required

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Climate Science, Environmental Economics, Environmental Engineering or closely related field

  • Master’s Degree in a related field is an asset

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years of management experience effectively leading, influencing and motivating a diverse team of professionals and stakeholders internally and externally.

  • Eight years of progressive experience leading or driving a strategic initiative or program

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative and inclusive approach to leadership.

  • Resilience and adaptability to navigate through challenges and complexities.

  • Proactive and self-motivated, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

  • Commitment to fostering a culture of engagement, growth, and continuous learning within the team.
