This position is moving to OPG Corporate Headquarters : In Summer 2025, OPG will officially welcome employees to our new Corporate Headquarters located at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario. This new space will enable teamwork, collaboration and innovation that will help us to achieve our mission to electrify life in one generation. This position will be temporarily based in Toronto or Durham until the move to Headquarters in the Summer of 2025.

   

*JOB OVERVIEW *

OPG is looking for a business-minded and results-oriented compensation professional to join its Compensation team in the role of  Senior Manager, Compensation .

Reporting to the Director of Compensation & Benefits, you will provide strategic direction and administration of OPG's Compensation Programs by leading the Compensation Centre of Expertise (CoE). Provide strategic advice to OPG's Management and Executive Leadership teams, HR Business Partners and Line Managers; while ensuring consistency, integrity and equity. Maintain a focus on continuous improvement and industry best practices while ensuring compliance with regulatory, legal and collective agreement frameworks.

Responsibilities in this role include designing, integrating and implementing compensation strategies, programs and policies. To provide leadership and direction to ensure OPG's compensation programs are cost-effective, well understood and have support at all levels of the organization, including the Board of Directors and incentivize the right behaviours.

As a compensation leadership team member, you will play a leadership role across the entire compensation department and share responsibilities for delivering HR's common goals.

*KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES  *

  

  • Lead and manage the Compensation CoE; which is comprised of a small team of specialists who are responsible for providing advice, guidance and support to the business;

  • Provide facilitative leadership, including motivating, enabling and coaching the team to deliver on expected outcomes effectively. While ensuring team members' experience includes technical and professional development;

  • Act as the subject matter expert and key contact in all compensation matters. Keeping apprised of relevant trends, legislation and issues impacting total rewards programs and processes. Provide functional advice on policies and procedures and ensure compliance with company governance and legal requirements;

  • Influence the review, design and delivery of OPG's total rewards programs; leading the assessment and implementation of compensation changes. This includes periodically assessing the effectiveness of program guidelines and procedures and ensuring adherence to collective agreement terms;

  • Identify emerging challenges and opportunities associated with OPG's compensation programs and processes. Consult with stakeholders across OPG to develop and implement strategies to address issues and drive continuous improvements;

  • Collaborate with other CoEs (e.g. Labour Relations, HR Business Partners, Talent Management, Recruitment, etc.), business representatives, external service providers/consultants and lawyers;

  • Oversee compensation processes and deliverables; such as external market survey participation, executive compensation analysis, market analysis, merit increase recommendations and annual incentive award programs;

  • Oversee the preparation and delivery of key communications and education related to Compensation programs and processes; including seminars/workshops for senior and Line leaders and other HR CoEs across OPG;

  • On a periodic and as-needed basis, with the support of the Law Division, represent the company at various proceedings as the subject matter expert for compensation. Work with Labour Relations and internal and external counsel to develop and prepare the company's strategic direction, including determination of risk and liability (both monetary and operational) and preparation of corporate position;

  • Participate in the development of bargaining agendas, and provide negotiations support to the bargaining team;

  • Oversee the administration, development and maintenance of compensation IT systems, including integration with SAP, SuccessFactors and all third-party systems and tools. This includes recommending system changes, writing business cases and system specifications, and user acceptance testing; and

  • Oversee the day-to-day relationship with third-party service providers, including managing associated costs, reviewing reports, conducting performance meetings, and ensuring compliance with provisions and contractual requirements.

*EDUCATION *

  

  • University or College Degree with relevant experience is required; and

  • Professional certification in compensation.

*QUALIFICATIONS *

  

We are seeking a strategic and experienced compensation professional who has experience designing and administering compensation programs in a highly regulated, unionized environment is preferred; as well as the following:

  • Minimum  7 – 10 years of progressive experience in effectively managing compensation strategies and program delivery;

  • Strong Leadership skills with a minimum of 3 years of management experience effectively leading, influencing and motivating a team of compensation resources and/or department;

  • Previous experience working for a unionized organization with a multi-union presence and compensation committee/management boards with similar compensation structures; such as defined benefit pension plan structure, etc.;

  • Proven track record of delivering results as part of a total rewards team, with accountability for all facets of the compensation programs.  Comprehensive understanding of effective, current and emerging practices, issues, insights, tactics, and trends in total rewards; 

  • Strong interpersonal skills, knowledge and experience in building, shaping and maintaining productive relationships and strong partnerships across business units and among a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders and executives across the organization; highly collaborative and effective team player;

  • Demonstrated strong analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills and solid experience in building and executing compensation strategies based on research and analysis. Ability to reach well-grounded, independent conclusions and influence outcomes directly and through a team;

  • Possess excellent communication skills, especially exceptionally strong writing skills.  Requires strong facilitation, negotiation, influencing and presentation skills with the ability to take highly technical and complex information and deliver a refined message that resonates with various audiences;

  • Ability to quickly understand business processes and their risk implications and analyze complex situations to reach appropriate conclusions;

  • Exceptional project management, organizational and decision-making skills to execute time-sensitive deliverables and effectively manage several projects simultaneously;

  • A strong drive and a high level of energy, commitment and enthusiasm to take on complex and challenging situations in a dynamic organization;

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment while effectively managing and adapting to multiple changing priorities;

  • Highest level of personal integrity, sound professional judgement and business acumen;

  • Proven ability to work in a complex, regulated corporate environment;

  • Ability to provide sound, risk-informed and practical compensation advice;

  • Demonstrated ability to be proactive and confident;

  • Solid experience and working knowledge of HRIS and compensation systems are required.  Experience working with SAP and SuccessFactors is an asset;

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint and Teams); and

  • Industry experience from a highly regulated industry such as utilities, energy, mining, manufacturing, health care, or the public sector is an asset.
