As the Tax Officer , you contribute to the overall success of a Scotiatrust Taxation Services unit in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. You also ensures\ all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

In this role, you will:

  • Champion a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

  • Proactively engage clients and partners to deliver comprehensive personal and estate and trust tax preparation services to an assigned group of clients within regulatory deadlines, defined policies and procedures, service level agreements, and audit standards.

  • Provide tax solutions and strategies to clients, and partners by proactively recognizing tax issues as they affect the client’s situation and ensuring that the clients, and our partners are made aware, as appropriate.

  • Be the primary contact for all clients, partners, and new business prospects.

  • Allocate, monitors and reviews all tax returns prepared by Associate Tax Officers, Tax Administrators, and seasonal staff to ensure completeness and accuracy and to minimize risk.

  • Provide on-going guidance, motivation and tax technical coaching to the Associate Tax Officers, Tax Administrators, and seasonal staff.

  • Provide constructive performance feedback for Associate Tax Officers, Tax Administrators, and seasonal staff.

  • Perform key tax preparation functions by preparing the most complex tax returns.

  • Understands how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

Do you have the skills and requirements that will enable you to succeed in this role? – We’d love to work with you if have:

  • Bi-lingualism – English/French preferred, particularly for candidates from Ottawa or Montreal region

  • Previous employment within a tax unit servicing individuals, trusts, and corporations

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma

  • May be working towards an accounting designation

  • Has completed the STEP or CSI Taxation Courses and keeps up-to-date with respect to legislative changes, particularly the frequent changes to the taxation of individuals, estates, trusts, corporations, and registered charities

  • Excellent computer skills are required, particularly in the use of tax preparation programs and MS Office, SalesForce and the Broadridge Trust System

Other Information

  • Previous employment within a tax unit servicing individuals, trusts, and corporations

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma

  • May be working towards an accounting designation
