EDC's Structured and Project Finance group (SPF) is a significant player in global project and infrastructure finance. Since its establishment in 1995, EDC's Structured and Project Finance group has closed over 540 financing transactions globally, accounting for financings in excess of USD 41 billion (as of the end of 2021). The Technical Advisory Services (TAS) team is part of the SPF group specializing in technical advice to various equity and debt financing as well as insurance teams within EDC.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Technical Advisor in the TAS team with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Clean technologies

  • Mining and metals

  • Power Generation (renewables and non-renewables)

  • Utilities (power and water)

  • Information and communications technology

  • Infrastructure

  • Resources (forestry and agri-food)

The posting is targeted to candidates with skills and competencies commensurate for the Senior Technical Advisor position.

As the Senior Technical Advisor you will report to the Managing Principal and deliver in-house consulting services, providing guidance and advice to lending, insurance and equity underwriting groups from deal origination through to signing, monitoring, and asset management. Your work will result in enhanced and better-informed negotiations, structuring and decision making with respect to the financial transactions undertaken by EDC.

You will join a growing team of seven technical advisors covering a broad range of sectors. In addition to your primary sector(s), you will have opportunities to expand your knowledge base and support your team members in other sectors as required.

Technical Advisory Services is a dedicated and motivated team of engineering professionals with business experience in key industries. The team works together in bringing skills and knowledge that combine engineering and project management expertise and commercial discipline to our clients. Together, we assess and help mitigate technical, industry, operational, commercial and managerial risks associated with financial services provided by EDC. This includes due diligence services on technical and commercial feasibility of project and investment proposals. Although not exclusively, a considerable proportion of work is in support of structured and project finance transactions.

Main responsibilities

  • Deliver technical and commercial advice to internal clients.

  • Undertake technical due diligence and analysis of technical and operational risks that may impact investment, financing and insurance transactions.

  • Analyze key documents such as business plans, feasibility studies, cost estimates, implementation plans, technical designs, schedules and related commercial contracts.

  • Provide recommendations to internal clients on strategies to mitigate technical and commercial risks.

  • Independently research and analyze relevant information, interviewing key participants in the transaction as appropriate.

  • As a subject matter expert, up to date knowledge on existing and emerging technologies, developments, competitive landscape and trends.

  • Manage relationships with external technical consultants. This includes developing terms of reference, consultant selection and engagement, as well as ongoing liaison and review of reports.

  • Provide input to the corporate and sector strategy.

  • Liaises with external clients and other parties as appropriate, including playing lead technical role among lenders.

  • Travel for site visits or meetings within Canada and internationally. Typical travel takes place over 1-7 days, 2-6 times per year.

Screening Criteria

  • University degree in Engineering

  • Minimum 7 years of relevant business experience in a technical, consulting, project management or other industry role pertaining to sectors specified.

  • Accreditation as a Licensed Professional Engineer, or eligibility for licensure in Canada.

  • Willing and able to travel within Canada and internationally for site visits or meetings, as needed.

Skills & Competencies

  • Industry insight leading to the ability to understand and interpret the needs of internal and external clients.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to exercise sound technical and business judgement, often with limited information.

  • Ability to lead challenging or high impact transaction assessments associated with both established and early-stage companies.

  • Ability to address key issues with complex structures that may present challenging circumstances.

  • Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines in a multi-project environment.

  • Ability to discern, distill, and concisely and clearly communicate key issues in complex business transactions and provide advice based on client needs.

Assets

  • Private sector experience.

  • External consulting experience.

  • Degree, diploma or training in Business, Finance or related discipline.

  • Bilingualism in both official languages (English and French).

Salary Range

  • Technical Advisory 19: Salary is based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $107,132 - $155,000 performance-based incentive.

Location

  • Export Development Canada is a hybrid work environment.

  • This role is to be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa
