Satellite Payload Engineer

Are you passionate about cutting-edge satellite technology and global connectivity? We are seeking a motivated and highly talented engineer to join our spacecraft payload team. As a member of the growing LEO Payload Engineering team, you will play a crucial role in the success of the Telesat Lightspeed LEO satellite constellation program.

Main Responsibilities

• The responsibilities and range of activities may vary, however the role will include:

• Collaborating closely with other payload team members to become familiar with the responsibilities of a Telesat Lightspeed payload engineer

• Supporting other payload team members to ensure that the development, qualification and performance of the hardware meets the Telesat Lightspeed requirements

• Monitoring the spacecraft and payload unit design activities to ensure that the committed services and deliveries meet all the technical requirements

• Becoming familiar with payload integration and testing activities

• Working with cross-functional teams to understand and proactively resolve design, production or test issues

• Evaluating the pertinent technical analyses presented by the spacecraft supplier, as required

• Analyzing design and test/production review data and actively participating in various meetings with the spacecraft manufacturer and other suppliers

• Supporting payload In-Orbit Testing (IOT) and commissioning activities

• Preparing presentations and regular status reports

Education & Experience Required

• Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical/Aerospace (or equivalent) is required

• Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant work experience (space industry experience preferred, but not mandatory)

• Excellent knowledge of active and passive RF component design (transmission lines/waveguides, filters, antennas, amplifiers, etc.)

• Good knowledge of electronic circuit design, processors and digital communication (digital to analog & analog to digital conversion, encoding/decoding, modulation/demodulation schemes, etc.)

• Familiarity with manufacturing & testing of RF/digital components

• Knowledge of optical communications an asset (optical fibers, lasers, detectors, etc.)

• Knowledge of network components and protocols an asset (ethernet, routing fundamentals, etc.)

• Technical expertise supported by strong organizational and planning skills

• Strong technical, presentation, interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)

• Bilingual in English and French an asset (but not required)

• Comfortable with or willing to learn how to use collaborative software such as Jira, Confluence & Jama

• Familiar with MathWorks MATLAB

Decision Making & Supervision

• In this role, the incumbent will be part of the Telesat Lightspeed Space Segment Payload team and will have the opportunity to learn and play a significant role in the biggest Canadian space project of all time.

Supervision Exercised

• This position has no direct reports. However, based on past experience and expertise, the incumbent may have the opportunity to provide technical guidance to junior and senior engineers from all groups.

Working Conditions

• Working conditions are typical of an office environment.

• This position will be based out of the Telesat Ottawa (Ontario) Headquarters.

• Minimum 4-days a week in office (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday).

• Frequent travel to the spacecraft supplier (Montreal), and occasional international travel may be required.

The successful candidate must be able to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods program (CGP). Canadian government security clearance may also be required.
