Job Overview
The Indo Pacific Group is looking for a dynamic business development professional and seasoned leader to join the Indo Pacific team.
Their team will include representations in several countries including (Japan, South Korea, China and Oceania) and the successful candidate must be willing to relocate to Tokyo, Japan.
With the importance of building out this critical market for Canadian exporters, this position will be responsible for establishing and managing deep strategic relationships, through personal engagement and leading through a team of seasoned business development professionals. The RVP will have ownership for the performance and results of the business strategy in the countries assigned to their region in alignment with the overall EDC and group objectives.
The successful candidate will be a driven and collaborative individual who will take accountability for exceeding our aggressive growth targets for this region. They will understand how critical the region is in reaching EDC’s goal of increasing Canada’s international trade by 60% by 2030 and ensure that the team is aligned in this common goal. Given that the team is comprised of geographically dispersed locally engaged staff, the RVP will need to be adept at leading and motivating staff remotely.
Reporting to the Managing Director, and Head of Indo-Pacific, this is a position in market, it critical that the successful candidate is diplomatic and polished. The role expands beyond business development into forging and maintaining relationships with key external stakeholders including (but not limited to): Global Affairs Canada, the Trade Commission of Canada, other Export Credit Agencies, and Financial Institutions.
Discipline Summary
Lead the strategy development for each country and “big picture” view, providing guidance and feedback for a successful execution aligned to EDC and Canada goals
Creates business development opportunities abroad with large and mid-sized enterprises across EDC’s identified sectors of the future for the Indo Pacific region (Agri-Food, Infrastructure/Cleantech, Advanced Manufacturing).
Builds and maintains effective long-term relationships with key Market Leaders, industry associations, Financial Institutions in Canada and abroad.
Possess expert relationship building skills and the capability of connecting to the business community as the first time in market presence for EDC;
Provides coaching and support to direct reports for excellence in account management of key buyers, borrowers and market intermediaries and partners, and contributing to the systematic management of EDC's Canadian accounts active or interested in the market;
Ensures pipeline growth and the aggressive generation of new financing business in line with EDC’s corporate strategy;
Evaluates new potential clients and progress of onboarding;
Delivers corporate representation at high caliber events across the region and in Canada;
Ensures relevant market intelligence and solid knowledge of the region is timely shared;
Possess strong leadership skills in order to lead, coach and mentor their team in the region
Maintains excellent and close working relationships with all the relevant EDC teams and socializes transactions and common operational and strategic issues;
Expert understanding of financial requirements throughout the life cycle of capital projects and related financing techniques;
Expert knowledge of the Canadian export and investment opportunities in these regions;
Demonstrated track success record to identify and deliver on new business opportunities;
Excellent influencing, negotiating, relationship management and presentation skills;
Key Responsibilities
Owns their region business strategy performance and results, aligned with EDC’s and our International Markets over-arching strategy;
Leads a team of senior business development professionals across the IP to achieve aggressive targets and supports direct reports at the C-suite level for specific business objectives;
Leads the market entry of EDC in their region, networking with the business community, partners, and team Canada in the different countries, identifying opportunities for Canadian exporters;
Provides leadership, coaching, motivation to their regional team and ensure accountability;
Supports team in negotiations with prospective customers and partners;
Maintains excellent and close collaborative relationships with relevant internal EDC teams at leadership level;
Directs the performance and skill/career development of their team, ensuring adequate capacity and capability to address the needs of the organization.
Screening Criteria
Completed an Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration or Finance
Minimum 10 years of business development, international business, financial services, or related experience
Minimum 5 years of leadership experience
Has demonstrated success at developing and executing on business/market development plans and strategies
Experience leading high performing business development teams with proven track record of sales leadership success
Advanced knowledge of best practices in sales/account management
Demonstrates leadership abilities
Business development and financing experience
Knowledge of region, previous experience and/or familiarity with the Indo-Pacific market
Bilingual in both official languages (French and English)
Assets
MBA or professional designation (CFA)
Experience in market as Chief Representative / International Experience
Ability to communicate in Japanese
CRM experience
Compensation Details:
Dir Business Development 21: Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $144,156 to $240,260 performance-based incentive.
Please note, we will be drawing from this pool of qualified candidates for future opportunities that open up within the next 12 months.
Location
Export Development Canada is a hybrid work environment.
This role will be performed from EDC’s office hub in Tokyo.
