*JOB OVERVIEW *

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) Trainee. 

This is a developmental role which will provide the successful candidate with full experience requirements to satisfy the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) Program.  To be eligible for this position you must be registered as a student with CPA Canada.  In this role, you will perform increasingly complex work assignments over the course of the training program, reaching the competences expected of an entry-level CPA. You will obtain work experience with all the required competencies while rotating through several teams within OPG’s Finance organization.

*KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES  *

Under the supervision and through a collaborative relationship with the Manager(s) and/or the Senior Manager(s) in the various Finance teams, the successful candidate will engage in some of the following activities:

External Reporting & Accounting Policy:  support the preparation, validation and filing of annual and quarterly external disclosures including financial statements, MD&A, AIF, news releases and other regulatory filings.  Provide support in the evaluation, preparation and implementation of new accounting policies, and complex technical accounting areas under US GAAP, IFRS, and public company regulatory standards.  Work closely with team members to support external auditor requests. Ensure the end-to-end financial reporting process is compliant with appropriate internal controls and ensure efficiency in the overall process on an ongoing basis. 

Business Planning & Reporting:  provide decision support to the OPG senior executive team through oversight of consolidated financial results with responsibilities that include short-range and long-range financial plans, Board of Directors and ELT reporting and scorecards, benchmarking studies and corporate financial policy development. The Corporate Business Planning & Reporting team liaises with business units and controllership teams in an advisory capacity and is responsible for the internal reporting of consolidated Financial and Operational results.

Controllership:  provide business-facing financial support to enterprise operations, projects and corporate service functions across OPG. The successful candidate will be assigned a client portfolio leading finance activities that include accounting, reconciliations, control testing, business case development, variance analysis and review of financial and operational results as a trusted business partner. The controllership teams work with their lines of business to budget, forecast and long-range plan financial and operational plans and demonstrate efficiency and cost prudency aligned with OPG strategy.

Internal Audit : support the planning and delivery of audit engagements and Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (ICOFR) program.  The successful candidate will perform walkthroughs to document and flow-chart business processes, conduct risk assessments, identify key control points, prepare test procedures, evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of controls, and provide recommendations to address deficiencies and/or risks identified.  Monitor the status and resolution of management actions to address control gaps to ensure implementation and sustainment of corrective measures.

*QUALIFICATIONS *

We are seeking a dynamic, results driven and analytical accounting and finance professional who is looking to grow their career, someone with a background and experience in the following: 

  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a flexible hybrid office environment. 

  • Knowledge with business management, accounting and finance processes and systems is required.  Up to two years of progressive experience is preferred. 

  • A willingness and desire to learn and develop.

  • Knowledge to support the development of financial strategies, polices, and procedures. 

  • Strong analytical skills, experience with financial reporting and management reporting. 

  • Experience with preparing internal or external financial reports, IFRS and/or US GAAP would be an asset. 

  • Sound judgment, critical thinking and creative problem-solving abilities; ability to think outside the box. 

  • Superior organizational and time management skills.  Must be able to prioritize, multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.  

  • Sense of urgency and decision-making skills in managing priorities and meeting internal and external timelines.

  • Experience and ability to anticipate upcoming needs, adapt to change in order to help conserve time and drive efficiency. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain productive client relationships. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively across the company and externally at all levels. 

  • Results-oriented focus is essential, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment and effectively manage several projects simultaneously. 

  • Ability to work in a cross-function environment, navigate organization and support systems to deliver results.  

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook). 

  • Experience using large financial and integrated enterprise systems such as SAP would be an asset. 

  • Experience in using IBM Cognos Disclosure Management would be an asset.

  • Looking for a confident, self-motivated individual who has a strong level of passion and desire to succeed. 

  • Experience and exposure from working in/for a highly rate regulated industry such as utilities, energy, power would be an asset.

Upon completion of the CPA Trainee position with OPG you will be expected to, at your own time and expense, prepare and pass all tests and/or comprehensive exams associated with completing your Canadian Chartered Professional Account designation (“CPA”). If you are unsuccessful in obtaining or maintaining your CPA designation upon completion of our trainee program you will be unqualified and ineligible for continued employment with OPG in this position.
