Department Athletics Specific Job Title Assistant Cheer Coach Reports to Head Coach Cheer Campus Queens Job Summary The Assistant Cheer Coach helps manage all personnel and aspects of the program, including the preparation of student-athletes through practice sessions and performances and assisting in the management and/or oversight at required athletic contests and events with the premier focus being basketball home contests. The person in this position will also coordinate the timeliness and preparedness for all pregame activities and must be able to serve as a proxy for the head cheer coach when needed. Essential Functions Practices Assist in making sure that practices are structured and organized. Support the head coach in creating a safe practice environment for every routine. Ensure all practice routines are certified and in compliance with USA Cheer regulations. Be able to teach proper, progressional technique for all movements, including collegiate pyramids, collegiate stunts, and all other routines as required. Be prepared to moderate practice routines based on skill level and the strength and coordination required for each technique if the head coach is not present. Should have the experience to assist the head coach in teaching and educating each team member on proper safety guidelines, specific to each technique as it pertains to 2.5 high pyramids, single and multi-base partner stunt techniques and inversions, and flipping basket tosses. Recruiting Assist in recruiting prospective students. Help ensure tryouts and clinics are organized, well-advertised, and well-attended. Make sure that all insurance guidelines and safety procedures are met. Team Management & Representation Assist in team management. Join head coach in continually educating team members about their high-profile nature and the importance of representation of the university. Encourage a positive attitude whenever interacting with staff, faculty, and opposing teams. Oversee appropriate attire for team travel, practice, games, and events. Help in confirming that student-athletes are always respectful. Administration Establish and maintain a working knowledge of the NCAA and Big East Conference rules and regulations and St. John's University policies and procedures to implement these operating guidelines, policies, and procedures to ensure 100% compliance throughout the calendar year for all personnel associated with the program. Check to see that team members always follow all ticket policies. With safety as a priority, assist the head coach in ensuring that all safety procedures outlined by the USA Cheer are strictly adhered to. Games & Appearances Assist the head coach in providing management and oversight at all required athletic contests and events with the premier focus of basketball home contests. Guarantee that the team will always be on time and prepared for all pre-game activities, that the team appearance will always follow dress code policy and be uniformed when traveling to and from games, and that the team will remain positive and professional during games in lieu of many demands and distractions. Maintain high standards of conduct and discipline. Competencies Energetic and motivated individual. Ability to manage expectation, lead in a positive fashion. Ability to recruit students. On court skill development. Strong organizational skills. Academic monitoring. Supervisory Responsibility This position monitors the student-athletes well as volunteer staff and may not be listed on the 'Restricted, Suspended and Ineligible persons' list from USA Cheer. Physical Demands While performing this job's duties, the employee will be required to stand and perform duties on the basketball court including passing, running, rebounding. The employee should be able to spot stunts and tumbling to create a safe environment. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work Part time 8:00am - 6:00pm (Hours will vary) Travel Travel is to basketball games at Madison Square Garden, UBS Arena, and the Barclays Center. Required Education and Experience Bachelor's degree required. Valid Driver's license. Background checks required. Minimum one-year collegiate coaching experience. A USA Cheer Membership and certification, including concussion certification. CPR/AED Certified.
