Job Purpose

To support successful and on-time delivery of substation projects including supporting the capital investment plan, distribution and transmission interconnection projects, and other emerging work or new technologies. Substation projects include equipment replacement, asset separation, rebuilds and greenfield (new) substations.

Key Accountabilities

  • Technical lead for electrical substation projects, including new substations and substations rebuilds. Provide leadership to a multi-disciplined project team

  • Perform preliminary and detail design & engineering for transmission and distribution class substations up to and including 345kV GIS substations. Provide detailed technical scope and cost estimate documentation for use by both internal and external design resources

  • Design modifications and additions to existing sites and 'green' field (new construction) locations

  • Conduct team meetings, coordinate site visits and site investigations and facilitate drawing reviews to deliver a detailed scope and design package

  • Perform engineering calculations and studies as necessary to support project scope

  • Perform quality assurance checks to ensure compliance with National Grid standards and specifications

  • Prepare Technical Specifications and work with Procurement to order equipment

  • Prepare comprehensive reports of technical problems, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations

  • Support Project Manager, Procurement, Estimating and Construction Management Processes

  • Coordinate with design consultants and interface with internal design staff

  • Review drawings associated with projects, including manufacturers' equipment

  • Manage consultants' work, ensuring compliance and technical adequacy against approved standards

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Demonstration of a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with a diverse group of personnel. Proven interpersonal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstration of effective time management and task prioritization and capability to independently projects tasks and apply technical skills with minimal oversight

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited engineering program with an emphasis on Power Systems

  • 10+ years of related work experience

  • FE exam preferred. PE license is a plus

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Project, CDEGS, Primavera and/or other similar software tools

  • Knowledge of the following is desired: Substation Equipment including Transformers, Breakers, Switches, Reclosers, Metal Clad Switchgear, etc. Substation construction and maintenance techniques, Electric utility operation practices, Preliminary Analysis including AC and DC sizing, Grounding and Lightning study analysis

  • Knowledge of industry standards, safety standards and existing electrical design codes including IEEE, ANSI, NFPA 70, ASTM, NESC and Building Code

  • Proficient Office 365 Suite (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Word, etc.)

  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

  • Ability to physically navigate in and around an electrical substation

  • Ability to describe consequences of non-contractual performance by suppliers or by National Grid and the bottom-line impact

Salary

$145,000 - $170,000 a year
