ABOUT THE FOUNDATION: Created in 1925 by Senator Simon and Olga Guggenheim in memory of their late son John Simon Guggenheim, a promising young scholar who died at the age of 17, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation offers Fellowships to exceptional artists, writers, scholars, and scientists in pursuit of scholarship in any field of knowledge and creation in any art form under the freest possible conditions. Guggenheim Fellowships are intended for mid-career individuals who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts, and who exhibit great promise for their future endeavors. Fellowships are awarded through an annual competition open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada. Of the approximately 3,000 applications received each year, about 175 Fellowships are awarded annually. Since its establishment, the Foundation has granted nearly $400 million in Fellowships to over 18,000 individuals, among whom are more than 125 Nobel laureates, members of all the national academies, winners of the Pulitzer Prize, Fields Medal, Turing Award, Bancroft Prize, National Book Award, and other internationally recognized honors. THE OPPORTUNITY: The Vice President (VP) will have primary responsibility for overseeing the entire range and lifecycle of the Foundation’s annual fellowship competition, under the supervision of the President. The individual in this role will guide, interface, and engage with Guggenheim Fellows and nominators. In addition to managing and mentoring their team, the VP works very closely with the Board of Trustees and the President. The VP will also work in collaboration with the Advancement team to help support the Foundation’s fundraising goals. The VP reports directly to the President, Edward Hirsch , and also works closely across the organization and with board-level committees. The individual in this role will lead a team of four, including the Program Director. The VP is a member of the leadership team and will work in partnership with others at all levels. IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Genuine interest in/passion for the Foundation’s mission. Significant history of leadership experience within an academic, cultural, or related not-for-profit institution. Candidates from industry with a strong mission connection may be considered. Gravitas and credibility; an understanding of the importance of maintaining artistic and intellectual standards. Ability to serve as a trusted advisor to the President. Strategy, thought leadership, and vision. Well-developed communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Able to serve as an external ambassador for the Foundation. Successful experience liaising with trustees and other high-level constituents. Understanding of the unique needs of academic, art, and cultural institutions and/or foundations. Familiarity with prestigious competitive application programs or transferable relevant experience. Successful experience managing and mentoring teams. Impeccable integrity and professionalism. Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. A collaborative, kind, and respectful disposition and a “roll up your sleeves” working style. An affinity for the fields in which the Foundation offers fellowships. Bachelor’s degree is required, an advanced degree is preferred.
