Position Summary Reporting directly to the Shops and Safety Manager with oversight by the Director of Academic Administration, the incumbent helps the Shops and Safety Manager to oversee the safe and effective operation of the ceramics shop. This includes equipment maintenance, cleaning, student and staff training, safe usage of equipment and chemicals, management and implantation of ceramics firing programs. This is a temporary, part-time Variable Hours Officer position that works 14 hours per week (3 days per week) through June 30, 2025. Please note, this position is up for renewal each year subject to budgetary review. Responsibilities Load, run, and unload kilns as part of a firing program. Develop a schedule and maintain a system for firing both class and graduate student?s ceramics work. Set up means of communication (if necessary) with students. Maintain shelf and kiln furniture. This includes grinding and kiln washing shelves and the creation of trays and other support structures to help keep the equipment clean and operational. Regularly maintain and ensure the safe working environment in and around the kiln area. This includes regular cleaning. Direct the Shop Staff Officers who have responsibilities within the ceramic area in ways they can support the ceramics area. Assist Shops Manager with the research of and regular purchase of necessary tools, equipment, and materials for shops and shop related classes. Embed oneself into classes to assist in various demonstrations as necessary. Liaise between new faculty and the established systems and uses of our shops' ceramics area. Work with Environmental Health & Safety, Fire Safety and Columbia University Facilities departments towards the smooth operation of the Shops and ensure compliance with Occupational & Safety Hazard Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and NYC fire department regulations and other applicable health and safety standards. Conduct regular inspections of tools and equipment and ensure safety equipment (e.g., eyewash, fire extinguisher, overhead safety shower, emergency exit) is in compliance. Make recommendations for any safety upgrades and advise on equipment, tool and material replacement. Ensure the availability and use of personal protective equipment consistent with activities being performed in the Shops. Coordinate personal protective equipment needs, selection, training and use with EH&S. Other appropriate duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications BA/BFA or equivalent experience required. Minimum of two years of ceramics technician experience required. Working knowledge of all aspects of Visual Arts shop usage, safety protocol, and maintenance is essential. Experience in running safety training workshops, and knowledge of OSHA, EPA and NYC Fire Department and workshop safety protocols are considered valuable strengths. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with Visual Arts students preferred.
