Position Summary disciplinary matters, including academic and behavioral misconduct. SCCS is responsible for referring students to available resources, offering appropriate protections, and coordinating the University?s student investigation and adjudication processes. The Office does not act as an advocate but is a neutral resource available to all students. Student Conduct and Community Standards, in accordance with the expectations of students at Columbia University, upholds the highest standards of respect, integrity, and civility. SCCS, in consultation with the Title IX Coordinator, is responsible for reviewing allegations of gender-based misconduct between students, and for providing support to students affected by gender-based misconduct. SCCS staff do not act as advocates, but rather serve as a neutral resource available to all students. The Office refers students to available resources, offers appropriate protections, and coordinates the investigative and adjudication processes, and all alternative resolutions, should they be offered. Working under the direction of the Senior Director of Title IX Investigations and the Title IX Coordinator, the Temporary Title IX Investigator is responsible for investigating incidents of alleged misconduct in violation of Columbia University?s Gender-Based Misconduct and Interim Title IX Policies and Procedures for Students. Additionally, the temporary Title IX Investigator works closely with a variety of University and community resources including but not limited to the Office of the General Counsel, Title IX Coordinator, Deans of Students Offices, and Sexual Violence Response to ensure a thorough investigative process and compliance with applicable equal opportunity and nondiscrimination legislation Responsibilities A. When a complaint is filed against a student, the Temporary Title IX Investigator, will assess the complaint with the Title IX Coordinator and Investigative team, which leads to a prompt and thorough investigation or an alternative resolution. The investigation includes: preparing an investigative plan and timeline, identifying and interviewing witnesses, and gathering and securing relevant documentation. The Investigator?s primary responsibilities are to act as an impartial party in the investigation, prepare a detailed report of the investigative findings, and make a recommendation to a Hearing Panel regarding responsibility. This position requires a significant amount of writing and analysis of documents, and an ability to investigate multiple complaints simultaneously in an efficient manner. B. Additional responsibilities include: ensuring a well-documented investigation process; analyzing information and working with the appropriate University offices in the course of investigations; and maintaining accurate and thorough investigatory files and reports; providing ongoing updates on cases. C. Performs other related duties as assigned. D. The Title IX Investigator reports to the Senior Director of Title IX Investigations. Minimum Qualifications J.D., M.Ed., M.S.W, or other advanced degree preferred. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience is required, which should include experience in conducting investigations and in complaint and grievance resolution. Demonstrated knowledge and the ability to interpret federal, state and local equal opportunity and non-discrimination laws and regulations including Title IX, FERPA, Violence Against Women Act and other applicable laws and regulations as required. A successful candidate must have strong organization, planning, analytic and problem resolution abilities and excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to remain neutral. Work experience within higher education, particularly student conduct experience, preferred. Knowledge of complexities surrounding sexual assault, sexual harassment, and dating and domestic violence cases in a university or college setting preferred. Writing sample required. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated ability to: communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; multitask and meet sensitive timelines; use discretion and good judgment; maintain a high level of confidentiality, and work collaboratively with diverse constituencies including students, faculty, staff, administrators and community partners.
