Responsibilities: The School of Design Strategies at Parsons is seeking a part-time faculty to teach a new design course that focuses on the integration of engineering within our experimental studio-based curriculum. This is a three-credit elective course that meets once a week and is offered through the Integrated Design major but is open to undergraduate students at The New School. The course will begin August 30th and run through December 13th. Course Description: PSDS 2580 Design Meets Engineering Fridays, 12:10-2:50 pm How do designers and engineers collaborate to solve complex problems? This course introduces design students to the fields of Biomedical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering through hands-on engagement with design projects. Students may experiment with basic circuit building, explore the interior workings of small machines, prototype wearable prosthetics, discover how urban centers are supplied with water, among other exploratory activities. We will consider how the designer's process can be informed by engineering research and techniques. Students will apply their acquired skills to design, construct, and test prototypes that address engineering problems. These iterations may be CAD based or physical builds. Guest lecturers from various engineering fields will elaborate on how they have collaborated with designers on real world projects. Students are not required to have previous engineering experience. We are seeking applicants with prior teaching experience in a design and/or engineering context. Hourly Rate: Studio courses $95.54/contact hour Seminar courses: $127.85/contact hour Minimum Qualifications: Minimum qualifications: 1-3 years teaching experience, preferably in a design and/or engineering context . Master's degree preferred. Ability to adhere to University COVID -19 Policy and requirements. Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree preferred.
