Position Summary The Columbia University Justice Lab in the College of Arts and Sciences is recruiting a Project Coordinator for its Square One Project. The Square One Project is a research and outreach project that grapples with fundamental issues including poverty and racial inequality, violence and safety, criminalization and punishment. The central question that guides Square One is, if we started from scratch, from ?square one,? how would we design justice policy differently? To answer this question, Square One incubates new thinking on the United States? response to violence and crime through a variety of activities including the preparation of research articles and a series of convenings with researchers, advocates and criminal justice practitioners. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for expanding, supporting, and maintaining the ongoing outreach and engagement efforts of the Square One Project related to its activities based at Columbia; will provide occasional support to the outreach and engagement efforts related to its activities in localities around the country; and will support the participation of the Principal Investigator in project outreach and engagement. The Project Coordinator will participate in project progress meetings with the Principal Investigator (Justice Lab Co-Director Bruce Western) and other project staff. Responsibilities With strategic input from the Director, the Project Coordinator will take the lead on the expansion, development, and execution of the Square One Project?s activities related to research and outreach, with occasional support to acttivities in localities. This will include supporting research activities by preparing literature reviews, conducting bibliographics searches, assisting with the preparation of manuscripts and related research activities, programmatic events and communications targeted to promote Square One?s research themes and outcomes to targeted partners. The Project Coordinator will independently research topics related to Square One?s outreach goals, identify key existing and potential partners, and develop approaches to reach out and engage diverse populations of partners. This will include contributing to the project?s confidential database for future targeted communications and outreach. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for creating, designing and preparing content for all outreach vehicles including letters, blog postings, newsletters, email updates and social media postings. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for identifying and coordinating opportunities for the Principal Investigator to participate in the outreach and engagement work of the Square One Project and other related activities and events. The Project Coordinator will create and disseminate all relevant event materials, include agendas and speaker notes as needed and will manage event operations, including communications with event participants, hosts, and/or presenters. Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor?s degree and/or equivalent related experience required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent written communication skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to handle complex and confidential information with discretion. Competency using a variety of computer software programs including word processing, spreadsheets, and/or databases.
