HERC: Metro New York & Southern Connecticut Postdoctoral Researcher: Cities, Communities, and Social Infrastructure in New York, New York

Employer Name: New York University

Postdoctoral Researcher- Assessing the State of New York?s Social Infrastructure The Institute for Public Knowledge?s (IPK) "Assessing the State of New York?s Social Infrastructure" is an ambitious project that will build on our past efforts to produce civic-minded research with a far-reaching impact. In 2025, our office will collaborate with Gehl People, a highly regarded urban research firm, to delve into New York?s Social Infrastructure. As highlighted by the U.S. Surgeon General in a 2023 report, social infrastructure is the top recommendation for combating loneliness. In the aftermath of a global pandemic, the importance of social infrastructure to thriving communities is increasingly recognized across our society. City parks, public libraries, community festivals, walkways, and other public sites for gathering play a vital role in sustaining democratic societies. Given recent cuts to city services in New York, city and state officials would greatly benefit from a report evaluating multiple cities' social infrastructure over the next year. IPK?s Postdoctoral Researcher will play a crucial role in each of the three core phases of work in our survey of New York?s Social Infrastructure. The researcher will collaborate with project staff to select a representative sample of study locations and engage partners to support local research. Potential cities that will be surveyed include Albany, Buffalo, New Rochelle, Peekskill, Poughkeepsie, Rochester, and Syracuse. In the second phase, the researcher must conduct several site visits with community partners. Working with Gehl Peoeple, the researcher will spend significant time in each selected city, interviewing key figures and documenting relevant community meetings. IPK will reimburse the researcher for their travel expenses. In the last phase, the researcher will share their findings with project staff and partners and work with Gehl People to develop a final report on New York?s social infrastructure in 2025. The final product will offer a data-rich framework and assessment report with city-specific and comparative findings for civic leaders across the state. It will also include an accessible list of recommendations for civic leaders interested in strengthening social infrastructure projects. Our report will not only provide a set of clear proposals for policymakers and practitioners but also offer a beacon of hope for improving social infrastructure in different communities. The Institute for Public Knowledge, a provostial institute, was founded in 2007 to align scholarship with major public issues. The Institute selects and develops topics for consideration and discussion in an effort to bring together academics, social researchers, and organizational leaders around issues of public concern. To further these investigations, the Institute forms working groups, which include organizational representatives, graduate students, faculty, and IPK Visiting Scholars from various organizations and academic institutions who share an interest in IPK?s topics and concerns.
