The Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York City invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist with interest life course research on cognitive aging and brain health, modifiable psychosocial and socioeconomic factors, grounded in life course and causal inference methods. The Postdoctoral Research Scientist will join an experienced team to establish a prospective community-based study (N=1,400) of previously and newly enrolled participants in the University for Seniors UfS program, and of age- and sex-matched non-UfS participating community residents, determine (1) the longitudinal associations of late life learning (LLL) with cognitive function, ADRD, and other related health measures (2) whether they are mediated through cognitive and social engagement and (3) whether LLL may modify the influence of earlier psychosocial exposures on these health measures. Work on this project with also constitute building infrastructure capacities to delineate opportunities for dementia prevention and research in Lebanon and similarly low-resourced settings. Depending on additional research interest and experience, there are also opportunities to participate in other ongoing research projects; including 1) a pooling project involving multiple cohorts to build a complete synthetic diverse lifecourse dataset to analyze how earl and mid-life social and vascular factors influence late life ADRD risk. 2) a project focused on the impacts of financial security and late-life income supplementation on cognition. The Postdoc is expected to increase his/her methodological and substantive knowledge of one or more of the aforementioned areas, build skills for developing and implementing research studies, and have opportunities to lead and/or co-author manuscript publications. They will perform population health research activities, including processing large datasets, performing statistical analyses, developing dynamic models, programming to build and implement model-inference systems, preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, delivering presentations at scientific meetings, and providing other research and methodological support for existing and ongoing studies. The position offers up to two years of postdoctoral fellowship with compensation commensurate with experience, an excellent benefits package and funds for travel to professional conferences and meetings. Individuals with the following characteristics will be competitive for the position: strong motivation and commitment to a career in disease modeling, excellent communication and quantitative skills, ability to conduct self-directed and collaborative research. · PhD, ScD, or equivalent degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or related analytical disciplines. · Comprehensive understanding of statistical concepts and methods related to causal inference. · Proficiency in at least one programing language (e.g., R, Python, Matlab); · Excellent communication skills (both oral and writing) and analytical skills. · Experience in survey modeling, quantitative bias analysis, simulation studies, and related longitudinal studies preferred.
