The Columbia Climate School, Center for Climate Systems Research (CCSR) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist (PDRS) to work in the area of global crop modeling and climate change at its Morningside campus in New York City. The PDRS will be part of an international team working to improve the responses of the global gridded crop model pDSSAT to flooding and cold temperatures in context of climate perturbation scenarios associated with nuclear conflict, atmospheric solar radiation management, and climate change. The successful candidate will work with the model source code to develop responses to water logging and cold temperature damage, but also run the improved crop model for several major crops globally and develope post-processing infrastructure to account to physical flood damage. The work will be integrated into the AgMIP Global Gridded Crop Modeling Initiative (GGCMI) a highly collaborative and active research community with international visibility. A small percentage of this position will be used to also engage with other AgMIP projects run at CCSR, which allows the candidate to gain experiences and develop leadership skills across different types of research projects. The PDRS is expected to present findings at national and/or international scientific conferences, and to prepare successful peer-reviewed publications in well-known sicentific journals. We are seeking a skills crop modeler with experience working with the DSSAT source code and in global crop impact analyses. Good coding skills are a requirement but also the ability to develop biophysical process understanding of the crop growth feedbacks we want to implement into the model. Candidates should have recently obtained or be nearing completion of a Ph.D. in earth-system sciences, geography, physics, computer science or related field. Experience in crop modeling, global crop impact analyses. Strong coding skills (R, Python, Fortran, shell script) and large data processing required. Initial appointment will be for one year with continuation contingent on performance and funding. There is currently 2 years of funding in place.
