HERC: Metro New York & Southern Connecticut Postdoctoral Research Scientist in New York, New York

Employer Name: Columbia University

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a postdoctoral research scientist. The incumbent will work with Dhruv Balwada (website: https://dhruvbalwada.github.io/) on questions relating to ocean macroturbulence - flow at scales of 1-100km, which play an important role in lateral and vertical transport of ocean tracers. The scientist will be expected to work on two complementary areas: (1) using machine learning techniques to combine observations from scattered sensors (e.g., gliders, Argo floats, etc.) with high resolution ocean models, to derive data constrained estimates of high-resolution ocean state; and (2) estimating macroturbulence relevant statistics from in-situ current observations, and using these to study long term trends in the oceanic eddy field. The researcher is expected to present findings at national or international scientific conferences, to prepare publications for submission to scientific journals, and to participate in other activities that develop and advance their long-term career. We anticipate making an appointment for an initial period of one year with potential renewal for an additional year contingent on progress. We put a strong emphasis on excellent communication skills, interpersonal and organizational skills, independent judgment, and demonstrated ability to conduct and publish high-quality research. We seek an early-career researcher who has recently completed or is nearing completion of a Ph.D. with training in Physical Oceanography or in a closely-related field. The Postdoctoral Research Scientist will join a vibrant research community spanning the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) and NSF?s Learning the Earth with Artificial Intelligence and Physics (LEAP) Science and Technology Center. This search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled. Tentative start date is January 1, 2025, with some flexibility. Appointment will be for one year, with continuation for a second year, dependent on available funding and research progress.
