Position Summary Act as liaison between patient and physician, obtain pre-authorizations, schedules surgeries and pre-operative tests, and counsel patients prior to surgery regarding financial responsibility. Complete revenue cycle activities in Epic. Responsibilities Receives instructions from physicians about which surgery or test is recommended Verifies patient eligibility and coverage for the procedure; if patient is not eligible on date of service, or procedure is not a covered benefit, explains this to patient Counsels patients pre-operatively regarding their potential financial obligations, and provides information about patient insurance coverage Discusses pre-operative instructions with the patient, as directed by physicians Schedules operating room time, according to department guidelines and physician scheduling protocols, using online programs with NYPH and CHONY Ensures patients have all necessary pre-authorizations for their dates of service Obtains pre-authorizations at least one week in advance of the date of service Schedules appropriate pre-operative tests Coordinates all business and clinical paperwork prior to surgery, using physician-approved forms and checklists Responds to written and telephone inquiries from patient and carriers regarding planned surgeries Maintains communication among the physician, patient, insurance company and hospital at all times Conforms to all applicable HIPAA, Billing compliance and safety guidelines Maintains strict patient confidentiality Using Epic, resolve encounters held in Charge Review, Claim Edit, Credit and Follow-up Work Queues. Completes all other duties as assigned by the CDM Revenue Cycle Director Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience required plus two years related experience Preferred Qualifications Experience in a project-oriented position preferred Experience establishing relationships with insurance companies preferred Other Requirements Minimum two years experience working in a physician practice Computer literate, with keyboard skills, knowledge of institutionally used software packages and electronic medical records, such as Epic Ability to work with patients and make them feel comfortable Strong written and verbal communication skills Must be able to successfully complete systems training requirements Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran Columbia University is committed to the hiring of qualified local residents.
