Description

NYPL is hiring an Associate Manager, Teen Reading Ambassadors who will design and implement our literacy-focused teen employment program, called Teen Reading Ambassadors (TRA), for 10th-12th grade students in neighborhood branches across the city. At these branches, Teen Reading Ambassadors act as tutors to younger students attending NYPL’s after school homework help and enrichment program and work to encourage their love of reading and learning.

The Associate Manager will recruit high school students for the Ambassador program, develop and implement education and literacy-focused training to support Ambassadors working with children ages 6-12 and provide ongoing coaching and support to Ambassadors in their work at branches, among other duties as assigned. Additionally, the Associate Manager will assist in the production of a literary magazine for children, produced through the Teen Reading Ambassadors program.

This Associate Manager will be responsible for a portfolio of 30-34 Ambassadors at 15-20 branch locations.

We are looking for someone we can count on to:

Own :

  • Managing a portfolio of Teen Reading Ambassadors inclusive of recruitment, hiring, timekeeping, performance management, communication, coaching towards success, and more

  • Supporting a portfolio of branches where the Teen Reading Ambassadors work

Teach :

  • A series of professional development workshops that are developmentally-appropriate for high school students that will allow Teen Reading Ambassadors to be successful in their roles.

Learn:

  • The goals of the Young Adult Services department and our philosophy for working with young adults inclusive of NYPL’s strategic vision and our Teens360 initiative.

Improve :

  • Our systems and processes for managing part-time high-school Pages at scale

  • Our trainings and special events to most effectively provide a meaningful and successful program experience for Pages (in keeping with the Young Adult Services department’s vision)

Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month , this person will:

  • Review and understand the program goals, scope, and current management processes

  • Begin to establish relationships with the branch staff at their portfolio of branches

  • Begin to implement management processes for their portfolio of Teen Reading Ambassadors

  • [If hired between July-September] Support the ongoing recruitment and hiring process of Teen Reading Ambassadors

3 months , this person will:

  • Successfully and flexibly implement management processes for their portfolio of Teen Reading Ambassadors

  • Successfully establish relationships with branch staff at all branches in their portfolio

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of trainings for Teen Reading Ambassadors

6 months and beyond , this person will:

  • Maintain strong and effective relationships with branch staff at their portfolio of branches

  • Maintain strong and supportive managerial relationships with their portfolio of Teen Reading Ambassadors

  • Contribute to the development of new trainings for Ambassadors, special event planning, and the production of the Teen Reading Ambassador literary magazine

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Manager and fellow Associate Manager(s) to implement a high-quality, scalable, and sustainable high school program for 10th-12th grade students interested in working with children and giving back to their communities

  • Recruit high school students and manage the logistics of the Ambassador hiring process

  • Design and implement trainings on best practices working with children ages 6-12, homework help strategies, literacy skill-building strategies, and literacy-focused enrichment activities in a Library setting

  • Support the organization and planning of Ambassador special events, such as career panels, and programs, such as the TRA literary magazine

  • Provide supervision, coaching, and support of Ambassadors at approximately 16 branches and coordinate with the After School Program team and Branch staff in service of this goal

  • Coordinate program logistics including the purchasing and organization of materials

  • Coordinate and communicate regularly with internal partners including Children’s Programs & Services, Communications, Human Resources, and more

  • Maintain and analyze program data, including attendance

  • Participate in trainings and other professional development opportunities that focus on academic and literacy support for school-age children and/or workforce development and career exploration for high school students

  • Perform other duties as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Library Sciences, or a related field

Required Experience

  • Minimum of three years’ experience working with youth from diverse populations, preferably high school students, in a library, school, or non-profit setting

  • Experience in designing and facilitating innovative programs and/or curricula for high-school students

  • Experience giving feedback, coaching, and supervisory support to teens and/or adults

  • Experience creating and delivering interactive trainings, ideally both in-person and virtually

  • Experience coordinating work with many different constituencies, including internal stakeholders, external partners, and diverse patron/program participant populations

Required Skills

Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises 30-40 part-time teen interns at 15-20 locations
