Job Type: Officer of Administration Bargaining Unit: Regular/Temporary: Regular End Date if Temporary: Hours Per Week: 35 Salary Range: Position Summary The Associate Director (AD) of Multicultural Affairs and FLI Student Outreach reports directly to the Associate Dean of Multicultural Affairs (MA). Primary responsibilities include oversight and coordination of First-generation and Low Income (FLI) @ Columbia programs and resources; preparation of relevant trainings for students and other constituents. The AD will demonstrate a strong knowledge base of campus climate concerns within the undergraduate FLI community and is responsible to provide a comprehensive range of advocacy, education, information, and referrals for FLI students and groups. The AD will provide individual support to students in their social, leadership, and identity development. Additionally, the AD will oversee, coordinate and manage the Columbia Mentoring Initiative. Broadly, the AD will support identity-related dialogues; and will contribute to office-wide diversity and inclusion trainings and curricula development. Responsibilities Oversee, manage, facilitate, and assess programming and outreach focused on the FLI undergraduate community in Columbia College and Columbia Engineering. Apply identity development, intersectionality and social justice frameworks to programs, trainings, events, and supportive resources. Coordinate student outreach and programming with student coordinators and other MA associate directors. With the Associate Dean of MA, Dean of Undergraduate Student Life (USL), and relevant partners, lead efforts to address campus climate issues impacting FLI undergraduates. Oversee the FLI Student Advisory Board within MA. Through the FLI Resource Team, develop recommendations, in partnership with relevant offices, to improve the campus experiences for FLI students. Provide information, outreach, support, and advisement to FLI students on transition, adjustment, wellness, campus navigation, community building, and intercultural opportunities. With various campus partner offices, establish support groups, develop and provide resources for adjustment, and create social activities. Make referrals to other professionals, offices, or organizations on and off campus and follow-up with students, as needed. Develop a strong and communicative working relationship with partners in the First-in-Family staff within the Center for Academic Advising. Develop, coordinate, implement, and assess the Columbia Mentoring Initiative, which focuses on identity-informed intergenerational networks of support among first-year student, returning students, and alumni. Select, train, and supervise fourteen student chairs. Develop and facilitate program-wide events and programs, including mentor training. Advise identity-based student organizations; develop strong advisory relationships with advisees. Apply student and leadership development theories to inform advisement practices. Inform students of University policies and procedures, train students in event planning and management, and assist with critical decision-making. Provide support for organizations with budgets, contracts, and evening/ weekend event coverage and advisement when needed. Facilitate inter-organization communication and collaboration. Initiate and plan community building programs and meetings for constituencies represented in assigned advisement portfolio. Provide individual support to students in their social, leadership, and identity development and provide advocacy and support with the Associate Dean for individuals and student groups including advising and referral, as appropriate, on campus diversity issues and bias incidents. Contribute to the development, writing, facilitation, and assessment of original diversity education curricula for general Multicultural Affairs' by-request workshops and trainings. Support the development and implementation of related train-the-trainer programs. Collaborate with the Manager of Diversity Education to coordinate broad campus education, including by-request trainings and workshops. Assist with programs and services that further the missions of Multicultural Affairs, Undergraduate Student Life, Columbia College, and Columbia Engineering. Other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree required, and at least 3 years of professional experience in student affairs is essential. Strong knowledge of current climate and experiences for FLI undergraduates, social justice theories, student development theory, and community building required. Excellent intercultural communication and facilitation skills are essential. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in working with diverse populations including first-generation and/or low income students, international students, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and cultural organizations; as well as a substantive understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion work through an intersectional lens. Frequent evening and weekend hours necessary.
