The Stand-Alone MA Program in Sociology at Columbia University invites applications for an adjunct faculty position to teach MA Theory in the Fall of 2024. The MA in Sociology is a two-semester program which offers an introduction to social science theories and methods while supporting students as they carry out original research to fulfill the thesis requirement. Given this, the course offers a critical introduction to classical sociological theory while emphasizing the use of these perspectives for asking questions about and analyzing the contemporary social world. In addition to covering the ideas of Karl Marx, Émile Durkhiem, and Max Weber, the course should also include Georg Simmel, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Erving Goffman. This course teaches students to consider traditional questions of class, culture, and power, while also engaging with issues of identity, race, and gender through regular written assignments and in-class discussion. MA Theory is a weekly seminar, lasting one hour and fifty minutes, with a minimum of two hours of availability to meet individually with students per week. Instructors who teach in the Sociology MA Program will be appointed by the Sociology Department in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Positive performance can lead to additional teaching opportunities. Faculty teach in-person on-campus, and times are negotiable. The Sociology Department will assign a teaching assistant to this course, and the instructor will receive additional support and guidance from the Director of the MA Program. Our cohorts run between 19 and 25 students per year, and our program stands out for its capacity to tailor curriculum to student interests and to offer one-on-one support with research projects. The majority of our alumni apply their research skills in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors, while between one fifth and one fourth continue on to PhD programs at peer institutions.
