Posting Summary: The Career Advisor is part of a team of experts that delivers critical support to Teachers College students and alumni as they navigate their professional pathways. Our Masters and Doctoral students represent a diverse range of professional experience, goals, and expertise, and TC NEXT offers holistic support to ensure students’ success throughout their lifelong professional experiences. Reporting to the Associate Director, Advising + Programming, the Career Advisor will work alongside other advisors to administer career-based support services, as well as conceive, develop, and execute programming designed to meet student and alumni needs. The Career Advisor will also work with faculty and program administrators to strengthen the preparation and core competencies of their students, which translates to student success in the job marketplace and fulfillment of individual professional goals. The incumbent will bring expertise and credentials to the role, while working alongside the TC NEXT team to execute the vision for the office. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Career Advisement Conduct individual advisement sessions for students and alumni to provide resume/cover letter/curriculum vitae review, provide job search tips/strategies, salary negotiations, conduct mock interviews, and identify resources for career exploration Participate in drop-in hours and electronic review of career related documents. Career Development + Programming Develop, plan and execute TC NEXT-branded workshops, learning modules, and presentations (e.g. in-class) for students and alumni Assist the staff with all arrangements of career development events Make data-driven recommendations for new programming formats and content Coordinate programs and services in conjunction with faculty and academic programs to ensure that programs, services, and resources are directly correlated to academic departments, or at least the four areas of TC’s academic focus: Health, Education, Leadership, and Psychology Collaborate with faculty members across the College to implement key events that support the mission of the program, College and Office Collaborate with other members of TC NEXT Contribute to survey design and evaluation to gauge effectiveness of programming as measured through student, alumni, faculty and inter-departmental feedback Team engagement & Community Outreach(10%): Attend weekly TC NEXT team meetings and regular team retreats, as well as participate in optional team events (such as brainstorming sessions) when possible Work with TC NEXT and other members of the TC community to understand the needs of students and alumni as relates to career and academic opportunity planning, and to execute and communicate TC NEXT offerings Represent TC NEXT at events Participate in student meetings, departmental outreach, employer information sessions, College-wide committees, etc. Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent in a professional and student service oriented field Experience advising students Experience in early career advising/goal-setting Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects Excellent verbal/written and digital communication , interpersonal, customer service and presentation skills are essential to interact effectively with diverse internal and external professional groups Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and aptitude to learn new technology Ability to work effectively with diverse constituents, including employers, international students/alumni, faculty and administration. Experience with first-time job seekers and early-stage professionals Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in a relevant field Experience working with Masters and PhD students, postdoctoral scholars, and/or international students/scholars Experience in student affairs, including special event planning and programming Certification in Assessment, specifically MBTI or Strong Interest Inventory Proven ability and experience working at a college or university with a large international student population
