  1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Skill/ability 1: Ability to prepare samples for analyses. Conducts chemical separation of elements such as Re & Os, requiring a series of specialized analytical procedures & techniques performed under ultra clean conditions. Monitors product quality through quality control checks. Required Skill/ability 2: Ability to conduct mass spectrometry sample analyses. Isotopic analysis of standard samples and solution to verify machine performance specifications. Isotopic analysis of Re & Os separated from geological samples. Loading of purified samples to filaments for analysis. Coordination of instrument analysis schedules for numerous instrument users. Required Skill/ability 3: Ability to implement & document compliance of safety procedures. Under the guidance of the PI, develops and implements safety procedures unique to the lab. Monitors safety compliance of lab users & acts on any safety infractions. Ability to train lab users in research procedures. Ability to maintain training records. Required Skill/ability 4: Ability to make independent decisions/recommendations. Ability to judge quality of product based on quality control checks. Demonstrated operational procedures in the lab, housekeeping, scheduling of users, ordering of supplies, mixing chemical solutions to have on hand. Within the limits imposed by the sequential nature of the analyses, established own work schedule. Required Skill/ability 5: Good communication and interpersonal skills. Decision making skills. Flexibility, enthusiasm, and an ability to work as a close-knit team. Ability to prioritize workload. Preferred Education: Degree in Geology/Chemistry or the lab sciences is preferred. Science degree with additional training in geochemical techniques and theory would be considered. Formal training in chemical analysis. Work Week: Standard (M-F equal number of hours per day) Posting Position Title: Research Associate 1, MS University Job Title: Lab Manager Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Degree in Geology/Chemistry or the lab sciences is preferred. Science degree with additional training in geochemical techniques and theory would be considered. Formal training in chemical analysis. Master's Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience.
