job summary:

This position is primarily based in Google's office in Mountain View, CA. You may also need to go to the San Francisco office from time to time for studies or collaboration with other UXRs. ( When offices open back up ).

The area:

We follow a simple but vital premise in the User Experience group: "Focus on the user and all else will follow." We're passionately interested in our users and strive to learn everything we can about their goals and needs, attitudes and emotions to help define the products and experiences we create. The User Experience team is a critical driving force behind gathering these insights and then using them to inspire and inform design. We are a multi-disciplinary team of interaction designers, visual designers, user researchers, copywriters, and UX engineers who collaborate closely with each other and with Engineering and Product Management to create innovative, and usable products that people love.

The role:

In this role you'll have the opportunity to support our research activities in developing innovative, user-friendly products. We are looking for individuals who have excellent communication skills, can work fairly independently, and are diligent and detail oriented.

Mandatory

  • Bachelor Degree in Human Factors, Psychology, Design Research, or other field emphasizing human behavior; or in lieu of degree, related work experience;

  • 3-5 years of applied industry research experience; Demonstrable experience and comfort employing product-focused user research methods;

  • Detail-oriented and ability to work fairly independently on a variety of tasks;

  • strong oral and written communication skills;

  • Can prioritize time between multiple projects, and be flexible by adapting to changing schedules and different projects

Desired

  • Technical aptitude, familiarity with Google products (slides, sheets, docs) preferred; Knowledge of basic statistical concepts preferred

Skills

  • Usability Testing - In a usability-testing session, a researcher (called a "facilitator" or a "moderator") asks a participant to perform tasks, usually using one or more specific user interfaces.

  • While the participant completes each task, the researcher observes the participant's behavior and listens for feedback.

  • In depth interviewing - In-depth interviewing is a qualitative research technique that involves conducting intensive individual interviews with a small number of respondents to explore their perspectives on a particular idea, program, or situation.

responsibilities:

  • Prepare user research activities (working with the recruiters to schedule study sessions, setting up the usability lab, etc., engaging with stakeholders)

  • Observe and run usability testing sessions and interviews

  • Administer questionnaires, surveys, and interviews

  • Take notes during user study sessions

  • Analyze qualitative & quantitative data

  • Communicate findings from the study to stakeholders and research lead

  • Create reports & deliverables (including creating graphs, highlight videos, slide decks, etc.)

  • Analyze, interpret, and summarize existing research
