State of Minnesota Boiler Operator (Plant Maintenance Engineer - 2 positions) in Moorhead, Minnesota

Job Summary Job Summary * Efficiently operate high and low pressure steam generating equipment so that the proper pressure and amounts of steam are maintained to satisfy campus needs. Ensure that all operations meet the state and local operating codes and requirements. * Watch gauges on boilers and auxiliary equipment to determine that they are operating properly, safely, and efficiently such as pressure gauges, water levels, temperature gauges, flow meters, etc. and make necessary adjustments/repairs/maintenance. * Make switches to different fuels, for example from natural gas to oil and vice versa at the request of the gas company to avoid penalty payments for unauthorized use of natural gas. * Take water tests to determine the amount of blow down and proper amounts of chemicals to add to maintain proper chemistry. * Maintain Heating Plant in a neat, clean and orderly manner. * Check operation and maintain emergency generator, fuel supply, oil and battery so that it is ready to operate in case of an emergency. * Keep daily log and records of amount of steam usage, fuel consumption, water consumption, and equipment readings as directed or required for state and local codes. * Perform and/or assist in the regular and preventive maintenance of the following areas so that they are operated in an efficient and safe manner: * Heating systems * Cooling systems * HVAC and environmental controls to maintain a safe, comfortable environment * Electrical maintenance * Plumbing maintenance * May receive campus calls pertaining to any problem. Contact the proper MSU Moorhead Physical Plant service personnel or outsource contractor to correct the problem. * Assist the trades in remodeling and new construction as needed. * Supervise student employees as needed. * Act as a Power Plant Chief Engineer as directed. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications * Possession of a valid Steam Engineer's License of the class required by law for the Moorhead State University Heating Plant. * Must consent to a MnSCU Motor Vehicle Record check. * Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to read and interpret sketches, diagrams and blueprints. * Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the mechanical systems and the necessary safety precautions. * Knowledge of the principles of state heating and ventilating codes, steam-fitting code, OSHA and computerized HVAC control systems. * Ability to work shifts of 8-12 hours per day. * Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment of the mechanical trade. * Ability to work alone. * Skill in locating and adjusting/repairing defects in pneumatic and electric systems and equipment. * Basic understanding of E-mail, scheduling and computer monitoring equipment. * Ability to supervise the work of others. Physical Requirements * Ability to accomplish the physical requirements which include: walking, standing stooping, lifting (up to 75 lbs unassisted), reaching, bending, pushing, or pulling, carrying climbing/balancing. * Working conditions and physical surroundings which include working inside, outside or both; areas which have nose/vibrations; in areas which are dusty/poorly ventilated, work from ladders, platforms or bucket trucks. * Must be able to access boiler inspection manholes. * Ability to turn valves with 80 foot-pounds of pressure.
