Created in 2015 to align, lighten and modernize infrastructure, the Technology & Infrastructure (T & I) team is the backbone and the future forward arm of CBC/Radio-Canada. This is a hybrid role with a mix of in-office and remote work. Work arrangements will be discussed with hiring managers per departmental guidelines.

Your role

We are seeking candidates to fill the role of System Administrator, Production Services, for the Media Asset Management (MAM) system that houses the Corporation’s archive content.

Under the supervision of Production Services and MAM Maintenance, you will be responsible for implementing complex workflows for receiving, transforming and delivering media files using a combination of in-house and commercial software solutions. Your responsibilities will also extend to managing a server farm, which includes performing updates and maintenance, installing software and preserving the integrity of files and metadata processed by these systems. You will carry out these tasks working closely with Technology & Infrastructure (T&I) and Production partners.

Your judgment, knowledge, experience and skills will help you achieve the following:

  • Participate in strategic planning, providing expert advice on media management. Research and recommend potential innovative solutions.

  • Involve stakeholders as efficiently as possible and ensure their needs are met.

  • Design efficient, practical solutions to complex problems, particularly when it comes to integrating and optimizing our systems.

  • Prepare functional and schematic drawings for the various workflows.

  • Provide users and support teams with high-level technical support.

  • Document strategies, recommendations, communications and user guides, and prepare training.

  • Develop and recommend methods for quantifying the performance of our workflows.

  • Produce simple and complex performance statistics for our workflows.

What you bring:

  • University or community college graduation in computer science or equivalent

  • Three or more years’ relevant experience

  • Solid command of the principles surrounding IT environments and related concepts

  • Good knowledge of audio and video formats and codecs

  • Strong ability to develop Receive/Transform/Deliver workflows for audio/video files

  • Practical knowledge of server administration (Linux, Windows), virtualization, networking, databases and security

  • Intermediate knowledge of REST API principles and the interconnections between different computer systems

  • Knowledge of Vantage, Aspera, Avid, FFmpeg, Postman, Elasticsearch and Mongo a definite asset

  • Knowledge of SQL databases, relationships, queries, filtering and sorting, aggregation, etc.

  • Expert-level knowledge of scripting and development

  • Knowledge of continuous improvement concepts a definite asset

  • Experience working for a media post-production or technical maintenance company a definite asset

  • Ability to work a primarily daytime schedule while remaining available 24-7

Other knowledge:

  • Excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills a must

  • Ability to design and develop innovative solutions, as well as document technical specifications, with an eye to simplicity, reliability, manageability, scalability, extensibility, performance and reuse

  • Ability to collaborate with other business areas (computing, maintenance, networking, media and digital production) in order to align all aspects of our media and IT infrastructure with business requirements

  • Most assignments involve direct daily contact with CBC/Radio-Canada employees of different technical skill levels; strong communication skills (both written and oral) and good negotiation abilities are therefore key for this position

  • Technical leadership experience

  • Ability to draft complex reports and presentations requiring thoroughness, attention to detail and accuracy in calculations and writing

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, work independently and take initiative

  • Strong ability to generate and analyze statistical reports

  • Outstanding ability to communicate with and explain concepts to non-technical users

  • Strong time management skills

  • Functional bilingualism in English and French
