Under the direction of the Portfolio Manager, Currency Management, the incumbent is responsible for participating in portfolio management activities in the currency management team that sits within the broader CIBC Asset Management Multi-Asset and Currency Management group.
As part of the Global Sovereign and Currency unit, the Associate Portfolio Manager (APM) makes a significant contribution to the portfolio management of our active currency mandates. Drawing from our internal quantitative research capabilities and complemented by our internal fundamental research, the APM will take an important role in the research efforts, portfolio construction, implementation and monitoring of these mandates. Their research and portfolio management conclusions are shared with the Portfolio Manager for consideration and potential implementation into client portfolios.
The incumbent will have specific accountability for conducting analysis, research and development into the determinants of currency returns. This role requires continuous collaboration with, and provision of impactful insights to, the currency Portfolio Manager with the objective of significantly contributing to the achievement of currency portfolio performance objectives.

How you’ll succeed
Portfolio Management - Under the supervision of the Portfolio Manager, Currency Management, the APM will generate strategy ideas and support the portfolio management process for all currency portfolios in accordance with the established investment processes. Actively participate in managing the portfolios. This includes: regular review of quantitative model output; monitoring of economic and market events; evaluating Fundamental Analysts’ research and recommendations. Consider all relevant information to evaluate the implications for portfolio strategies and assess the actions required in portfolios. Actively participate in portfolio construction. This includes: advancing the discipline of risk budgeting/management to support the Portfolio Manager; constructing a portfolio management review that incorporates all elements of the investment process to guide portfolio management discussions and meetings. Actively participate in operational portfolio implementation. This includes: the effective maintenance of the proprietary CIBC AM Target Management System; coordination with CIBC AM currency traders to ensure smooth portfolio implementation.
Investment Research - In collaboration with the fundamental research team, perform ad-hoc research projects to support the team’s understanding of the global macro environment, leading to a better understanding of the outlook for currencies. Help guide the process that leads to relevant research topics and generate implementable recommendations. Track analyst discussions and make sure that analysts have reviewed all currencies within the currency investment universe over an appropriate period of time. Active participation in discussions surrounding the team’s quarterly macro-economic forecast sessions to provide insights, challenge conclusions, and interpret portfolio implications.
Process Enhancements and Business Developments - In collaboration with various teams, lead impactful research & development for enhancing the currency investment process. This includes: working with the Multi-Asset & Currency Management quantitative research team on various research projects; identifying research ideas and creating working models for potential integration into investment process; working to upgrade existing portfolio management systems; and data warehousing. Provide support to the Global Distribution team in its Business Development and client servicing activities. This includes contributing to currency-related client presentations and responding to ad-hoc data requests, charts and tables supporting the team’s views.

You’re a certified professional. You have current accreditation and good standing with the CFA designation. Masters in Economics or Finance or related field.
You can demonstrate experience and strong understanding of economic relationships and factor models as they relate to financial markets including currency, equity, and fixed income markets. Minimum 5 years in the investment management industry with broad exposure to macro-economic analysis.
