General Electric Senior Counsel, Government Affairs in Mississauga, Ontario

Role Summary:

Support the regional GE Healthcare business leadership in Canada through the development and implementation of government affairs and policy initiatives.The position will report functionally to the GE Global Government Affairs and Policy Vice President - Canada and operationally to the Canadian GE Healthcare VP. The incumbent will be a member of the Global Government Affairs and Policy Centre of Excellence.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop a strategy to protect and promote GE Healthcare businesses, through engagement with policy influencers, government ministers and officials as they develop programs and policies that will affect GE.

  • Work with the GE Canada Government Affairs and Policy Vice President and members of the regional leadership team within Healthcare to ensure awareness of key issues and build GE positions on those issues.

  • Identify and quantify top governmental issues for the Healthcare business and achieve results on those issues and opportunities.

  • Shape emerging regulations and legislation that will affect healthcare and industrial policy and ensure business awareness of the potential risks and benefits.

  • Represent GE with senior government representatives, ensuring the business point of view is taken into account as governments consider policies, laws, and regulations; develop and use contacts with governments to maximum effect.

  • Support commercial and market development opportunities identified by the businesses in which government is an instrumental decision-maker; support sales to governments by helping sales teams tailor bids to system needs, marshalling government support and advocacy for GE’s activities, and utilizing governmental financing.

  • Work closely with Public Affairs leaders to identify and deliver opportunities to position GE as a thought leader, particularly in the field of healthcare and innovation.

  • Lead and drive global functional initiatives within the Global Government Affairs and Policy function, liaising with business and functional leaders in the Global Government Affairs and Policy Centre of Excellence, with a focus on healthcare.

  • Provide industry leadership by participating in key industry associations (i.e., MEDEC, etc.) and support business leaders with their participation in these forums. Perform such other duties as from time to time may be required.


  • Advanced degree in a field such as business, law, economics or engineering

  • Minimum 8-15 years’ experience in a government affairs or related field.

  • Demonstrated understanding of governmental policy development and decision-making processes, including ability to identify and have access to key decision makers, particularly in the field of healthcare in Ontario and Quebec

  • Commitment to conducting GE's business affairs with the highest integrity, including strict adherence to applicable laws but also in a manner consistent with GE's values, which often go beyond mere legal compliance.

  • Successful experience working on government affairs and industry-related issues, ideally in government (or international organizations) as well as in the private sector.

  • Demonstrated orientation towards business growth and experience in connecting policy and business outcomes.

  • Substantive understanding of key healthcare policy and business issues.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to advise GE personnel on cultural sensitivities critical to their effectiveness.

  • Proven creator and participant in informal issue and project teams.

  • Goal oriented and a high degree of personal initiative.

  • Strong oral and written communication and advocacy skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly matrixed environment.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Fluency in English required; fluency in French strongly desired.
