UnitedHealth Group, a Fortune 7 company and leading health care organization, is currently looking for an experienced employment benefits paralegal to join its Employment and Benefits legal team in the role of Legal Services Consultant. The successful candidate will have 10+ years of experience as a paralegal. The position will be based at UnitedHealth Group's headquarters in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Research of applicable ERISA, tax, and state laws and regulations pertaining to retirement, health and welfare and other employee benefit plans, programs and arrangements

  • Provide employee benefits law support for mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures

  • Assist in the drafting of qualified and nonqualified retirement plans, health and welfare arrangements, and other employee benefit plans, programs and arrangements

  • Assist in the drafting of summary plan descriptions and other required disclosures for employee benefit plans, programs and arrangements

  • Assist with processing of participant claims and appeals, Qualified Domestic Relations Orders, and Powers of Attorney

  • Assist with review of Form 5500 filings

  • Prepare IRS determination letter application filings, IRS Voluntary Compliance Program application submissions, and other regulatory filings

  • Assist with benefit plan nondiscrimination and other testing

  • Assist with payroll-related compliance and benefits administration questions

  • Support the development of employee benefits communications directed to employees

  • Consult with internal and external legal counsel as appropriate

  • Monitor legal developments in employee benefits

  • Report to the Senior Associate General Counsel, Employment & Benefits in the Corporate Legal Department

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of legal experience in employee benefits matters

  • Strong working knowledge of employee benefits law

  • Strong organizational and project management skills

  • Strong communication, drafting, and research skills

  • Resourceful problem solver with a positive, can-do attitude

  • Ability to collaborate and build relationships across the enterprise and to gain and maintain credibility with internal and external partners

  • Ability to model corporate values of integrity, compassion, relationships, innovation and performance

  • You will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group’s US Telecommuting Policy

  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or a similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Paralegal certification

  • Experience providing employee benefits support for mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures

  • Experience in a corporate legal environment
