UnitedHealth Group Director, Nonqualified Plan Administration - Remote in Minnetonka, Minnesota

In this role, you will be an integral part of the UHG Corporate Benefits team and report to the Vice President, Retirement Benefits. You will lead the administration of all nonqualified plans (e.g., top hat plans, SERPs, excess benefit plans).

Responsible for nonqualified plan compliance with company policies and controls, and with the laws, regulations and rules issued or enforced by state, federal and foreign regulatory authorities about program administration and reporting. Responsible for all aspects of day-to-day program operations including third-party vendor management; researching, analyzing, and resolving issues; coordinating participant communication. Develops, executes, and supervises team members. Supports projects in partnership with human capital, legal, finance, accounting, payroll, communications, information technology, and other company professionals, including the implementation of a new Human Capital Management system.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the management of day-to-day operations of all active and frozen nonqualified plans

  • Ensure program policies, procedures, and provisions are effective, understood and followed. Implement efficiencies and process changes to reduce incidence of error

  • Research, resolve, and communicate with leaders, legal, and regulatory agencies on escalated employee nonqualified plan issues and claims

  • Proactive engagement with internal (e.g., payroll, strategy, administration, compliance, finance) and external stakeholders (e.g., vendors) to administer nonqualified plans and identify strategic opportunities

  • Lead relationship with third-party vendors providing guidance and assuring appropriate levels of performance as determined by the contract terms

  • Oversee the administration of acquired plans to ensure processes are compliant with plan provisions, guide the annual open enrollment process, if applicable, and ensure correct timing and taxation on contributions and distributions

  • Stay current on trends and developments related to nonqualified retirement plans, including regulatory updates

  • Utilize internal and external data to identify opportunities to improve plan designs and strategy

  • Interpret the results of data analyses and develop appropriate conclusions and recommendations to help guide people strategy and decision-making

  • Monitor and evaluate the impact (e.g., financial, employee experience) of initiatives

  • Discover and communicate meaningful patterns in data and provide context, insights, and analytics

Priorities will include:

  • Ensure nonqualified plan policies, procedures, and provisions are effective, documented, and followed. Recommend changes to reduce incidence of error, as needed

  • Establish detailed program participation and financial reporting for tracking and reporting purposes

  • Analyze newly acquired plan provisions and determine impact to employees who transfer within the Company or an affiliate

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of plan sponsor, consulting, or administration experience with nonqualified plans subject to Internal Revenue Code Section 409A

  • Expert Microsoft Excel skills

  • Solid communication skills

  • Solid data acumen, including the ability to identify trends, anomalies and points requiring additional investigation

  • Ability to consolidate raw data sets into themes and action plans

  • Curiosity for learning and working in ambiguous environments

  • Solid consultative, facilitation, and project management skills and the ability to exercise independent judgment

  • Experience leading teams (directly or indirectly)

  • Ability to work in a team environment with a client service focus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions

  • Expert proficiency in PeopleSoft and Oracle HCM applications

  • Expert in 401(k) Plan Design

  • Understanding of UnitedHealth Group business

  • Finance experience

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $122,100 to $234,700 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with al minimum wage laws as applicable.
