Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of defensive litigation and arbitrations involving the company; provide legal advice on complex and sensitive matters regarding various laws applicable to health care; may provide legal counsel in connection with internal investigations, subpoenas, and responses to government inquiries

  • Acquire and leverage deep knowledge of the industry and the specific business practices of the healthcare benefits business within UnitedHealth Group to advise senior business leaders

  • Provide a full range of legal counsel and advocacy related to all commercial and government healthcare insurance lines of business and provide legal advice on complex and sensitive matters regarding various laws applicable to health care

  • Provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks and privileges of the organization

  • Protect the organization’s rights in contract negotiations, disputes, settlements and litigation

  • Actively manage and supervise vendors and outside counsel on state and federal litigation, arbitration, mediation and settlement

  • Work collaboratively with other areas of the Legal Department, including engagement with the Clinical, Transactional, Contracting, Regulatory and Compliance teams

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree

  • 5+ years of complex commercial litigation experience with law firm or in-house legal department managing all phases of litigation

  • Proven strategic thinker with experience evaluating and determining legal course of action to meet business needs

  • Proven good standing in one or more jurisdictions

  • Proven well-developed written and verbal communications and presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant trial, arbitration and negotiation experience on complex disputes

  • First chair experience

  • Experience collaborating across matrixed business and legal environment

  • Experience providing advice to senior business leaders

  • Knowledge of health care benefits law, including ERISA

  • Proven ability to collaborate and work in a team environment

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
