The Associate Director, Protective Services, Site Security & Response, is a member of UnitedHealth Group's (UHG) Corporate Security team, reporting to the Director, Protective Services. Corporate Security is responsible for the Enterprise Workplace Security Program that ensures the protection of the company’s global workforce and physical assets through security risk management platforms.

The Associate Director, Protective Services, Site Security & Response, is accountable for managing site security and response for the Minnesota campus—which includes Optum, UHC, and UHG headquarters sites.

The Associate Director, Protective Services, Site Security & Response, under the oversight of the Director, Protective Services, will be accountable for day-to-day security response for key campus locations. To include supporting all functions related to executive, event, and campus security support. The Associate Director, Protective Services, Site Security & Response, will also be accountable for leading the coordination for security around high level meetings, visitors, and external affairs support.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to working with our external partners such as emergency services, law enforcement, and local government agencies. Developing relationships that assist with the safety of our campuses and proactive security responses when needed. This role will also include the development of readiness testing and participating in training scenarios with our guard force management programs.

The Associate Director, Protective Services, Site Security & Response, will act as a trusted advisor to the leader of Protective Services to support the overall Corporate Security mission and to enable the success, sustainability, and scalability of the entire enterprise workplace security program. The Associate Director, Protective Services, Site Security & Response will also be accountable for building and maintaining strong internal partnerships with key stakeholders to include but not limited to: UHG Events CoE; UHG Office of the CEO; Executive Management Team; Executive Assistant members; Global Crisis Management (GCM); Enterprise Information Security (EIS); Corporate Communications; Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (EOHS); Human Capital/Employee Relations; LCRA (Compliance, Employment Law, Litigation and Privacy); Global Travel; UHC Global Risk; Real Estate Services (RES); and business stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for strategically enhancing and maintaining site security and emergency response protocols across assigned UHG campuses, ensuring the continual application of consistent security measures and policies

  • Fostering a visible, in-person presence to cultivate trust and accessibility among all levels of personnel, from frontline employees to top executives, ensuring effective communication channels and approachability for addressing security concerns and fostering a cohesive security culture throughout the organization

  • Collaborating seamlessly with partners across the corporate security landscape, including the Chief Security Officer (CSO), U.S. Security Operations, and Risk Management, to foster a cohesive team dynamic and ensure alignment of priorities, thereby enhancing overall security effectiveness and resilience

  • Supporting the operationalization, integration, scalability, and ongoing enhancement of protective services programs, including executive protection, event security, and special risk programs

  • Developing policies and procedures aimed at enhancing the daily safety of UHG property and employees, fostering a secure environment through proactive measures and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Support the Director, Protective Services in developing and maintaining contingency and emergency response plans related to executive protection, campus security, and event security

  • Acting as the primary security liaison for executives, employees, and external security resources, while establishing an efficient and cohesive security framework onsite

  • Assist in managing security planning and implementation for key corporate events as well as special and/or high-risk events involving executives

  • Establish and maintain robust connections with local/state/federal law enforcement, as well as other emergency services, as necessary, to ensure comprehensive access to intelligence and security resources, thereby facilitating informed decision-making and proactive measures to prevent emergencies whenever feasible

  • Deliver high-level security training and information to senior leadership across the organization when necessary

  • Support the enterprise by driving innovation, ideas, improved use of technology/AI, and process enhancements across Corporate Security through expertise and knowledge of industry best practices and developments

  • Provide strong, strategic leadership, complex problem-solving, critical thinking, and objective analysis through difficult, complex, and/or critical scenarios and issues; act as a strategic advisor to the CSO on security and business risk, identifying challenges as well as solutions

  • Identify and communicate to leadership and partners strategic business requirements related to executive protection, event security, and campus security for proposed short-term and long-term solutions

  • Oversee and drive integrated Corporate Security response to critical security incidents, threats and crises related to executives and events, in alignment with our Risk Management shared services

  • Develop, innovate, communicate, and implement the overarching vision, strategy, and operational plans across the Protective Services platform in alignment with the overall company and departmental strategies

  • Measure and communicate to leadership the performance and effectiveness of the Protective Services programs using key indicators, metrics, and data

  • This role may be assigned other duties as required

  • Role to be located in Minneapolis, MN metro

  • This role requires 25% of travel

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant security experience in the private and/or public sector to include security risk management, intelligence, law enforcement and/or military

  • Ability to be on campus for day-to-day operational leadership

  • Prior leadership and management experience, leading diverse teams and strategic platforms

  • Demonstrated experience in strategy development and planning

  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex security operations in multi-national organization and solid understanding of evolving global security risks

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing a security program

  • Ability to navigate high levels of ambiguity/uncertainty and make critical decisions rapidly

  • Superior problem-solving and critical thinking ability

  • Solid leadership engagement, communication, and presentation skills to include personal briefings

  • Ability to work across and navigate a large matrixed organization, strong business acumen

  • Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals at all levels of the organization

  • High levels of integrity and credibility

  • Critical understanding of confidentiality and situational sensitivity

  • Effective using MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
