Reporting to the VP, Global Corporate Communications, the Director, DE&I and Social Impact Communications leads the external effort to tell the story of Pearson’s purpose in the world. In particular, this role will be tasked with bringing to life the need for equity in education and Pearson’s role in achieving that. The director will also help weave sustainability and social impact across the company’s corporate and product narratives and build the external profiles of the employees and executives responsible for this work.

We’re looking for an experienced communications professional with a head for strategy and heart for vibrant storytelling. This is a highly collaborative role that requires vision, a global perspective and deep expertise in the craft of public relations.

Key Deliverables

Best-in-Class Purpose Driven Communications

  • Lead and develop external communications strategies for Pearson’s DE&I, Sustainability and social impact initiatives. Turn those strategies into deliverables that can be tracked and measured.

  • Develop messaging, talking points, and external communications products (press releases, Q&As, press statements etc) that help tell the DE&I and sustainability stories for a variety of external audiences

  • Identify human interest and global business stories that align with our corporate strategy and that can build visibility in the social impact space in digital channels and with media, employees, investors and consumers.

  • Working closely with the media relations teams, develop pitches and conduct media outreach, especially to diverse media outlets. Work reactively to help the media relations team manage incoming media request regarding DE&I and sustainability activities.

Corporate Reputation

  • Work proactively to enhance and protect Pearson’s reputations related to DE&I and Sustainability issues and corporate initiatives.

  • Anticipate and track reputation issue related to DE&I, social impact or sustainability.

  • Lead issue and reputation management in these areas, in close coordination with the corporate media relations teams.

Building Relationships and Working Cross Functionally

  • Act as trusted advisor to the Chief Diversity Officer, the VP, Sustainability and their teams.

  • Work closely with product teams and business leaders to tell Pearson’s equity and social impact stories through our products and services

  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across global corporate communications and marketing to ensure communication activities align to the corporate strategy, brand and messaging, along with the broader corporate communications cadence.

  • Collaborate closely with employee communications teams to ensure that external storytelling efforts are consistent with employee communications

  • Work with financial communications teams to inform messaging on sustainability and equity that align with the interests of our investor community

  • Work with the social media and digital teams to inform and develop compelling digital content that conveys Pearson’s DE&I and social impact stories

Qualifications

  • Communications Expertise: Experience managing external communications and media relations in a large, complex company, organization, or PR agency. Experience in a direct-to-consumer or digital brand is highly valued.

  • Experience with Purpose Driven Communications : Demonstrated experience driving external communications efforts and campaigns for DE&I and sustainability initiatives

  • Media Relations Experience : Established relationships with purpose-related and diverse media outlets, along with experience as an on the record spokesperson and global media experience.

  • Issue Management Experience: Reputation and issue management experience is a plus

  • Global Mindset: Understanding of diversity and inclusion issues globally and how they resonate in local markets

  • Innovative, Commercially-Oriented Thinking: Understanding how strategic marketing and communications can and must further business outcomes

  • Executive Counsel: Demonstrated abilities as a go-to leader and thought partner for senior executives and peers within the business

  • Collaborative Approach: The ability to diplomatically, convincingly, and credibly navigate internal relationships and stakeholders; intellectual rigor and emotional intelligence are a must

  • Effective Communication: As an education company, high quality written and spoken communication is essential; this person must be an effective and credible conveyor of information both internally and externally as an ambassador of the brand
