POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Executive Director, and consistent with the mission of the YMCA and the policies and guidelines of the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the Healthy Living Director is responsible for the effective operation of the Healthy Living and Sport Departments. The Healthy Living Director is accountable for delivering exceptional and outstanding wellness programs and service to YMCA members and program participants. He/She leads, manages, and supervises the Healthy Living staff and volunteers along with Sport program staff and volunteers and is directly responsible for the growth, development and implementation of all Healthy Living programs. The incumbent should have experience in non-profit management, marketing and development of services through sales and partnerships, superior customer engagement skills, financial management and reporting, and staff supervision. This position will serve in a key leadership capacity for the association in support of healthy living and center operations. The Healthy Living Director is a highly visible representative of the YMCA mission and character development values, and champions our charitable impact in the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform quality work within given deadlines and expectations with or without direct supervision and can work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other appropriate individuals.
  2. Ensure a culture of committed relationships and engagement is developed, resulting in increased participation in the YMCA by members, community participants, and volunteers.
  3. Know and understand all Healthy Living and Sport Department policies and procedures; ensure that all policies are always consistently enforced and procedures are consistently followed.
  4. Recruit, interview, and hire healthy living staff to meet facility needs and improve program offerings. This includes specific Human Resources functions including but not limited to, hiring duties (i.e. auditions, audits, paperwork, etc.), payroll, and employee documentation, recognition, training, meetings, and evaluations.
  5. Manage the hours and wages of hourly program staff according to the department’s budget. Any overtime must be pre-approved by the associate director or the executive director.
  6. Continually ensure that all staff maintain required certifications and are aware of the expiration dates of their current certifications. Ensure emergency preparedness through the regular execution of emergency drills.
  7. Initiate communications with the Executive Director as necessary concerning program problems, personnel conflicts, and member concerns.
  8. Organize and conduct department staff meetings as needed. Provide at least one “make-up” time for each staff meeting/ in-service training. Continually communicate with and inform staff about YMCA programs and current issues.
  9. Develop and manage the yearly Healthy Living and Sports Department budget. Continuously display effective and efficient fiscal management. Submit monthly variance reports and accurate budget forecasts.
  10. Develop, schedule, implement, and supervise all wellness programming including but not limited to New Member Orientations/ Trainings, Coaching programs, Group Exercise, Specialty Exercise Courses, Wellness Orientations, and Personal Training. Develop and distribute schedules for all wellness programming.
  11. Lead Sports Coordinator and volunteers in the development, scheduling and implementation of all youth and adult sport programming.
  12. Identify and develop specific programming aimed at serving target populations to meet member and community needs.
  13. Work collaboratively with Population Health and Nutrition Department to expand services to members and the community while promoting membership.
  14. Support the direction of the Healthy Living/Membership strategy team and serve on the Association Healthy Living Operation group in alignment with the association’s strategic plan.
  15. Working with the association cabinet, develop seasonal fitness programs targeting member involvement. Maintain effective communications about programs to members via social media, community partners, and other communication platforms.
  16. Monitor and purchase necessary wellness equipment. Maintain and upkeep all equipment through scheduled and preventative maintenance and repair.
  17. Develop, coordinate, market, communicate, and evaluate all wellness program offerings and services; abide by YMCA of WNC marketing guidelines when developing marketing materials.
  18. Participate in association and/or community healthy living programs, events, and initiatives as assigned.
  19. Assist in the development, implementation, and execution of Work Place Wellness & Corporate Partnership goals.
  20. Work with Member Engagement Director to implement member engagement initiatives and programs
  21. Assist with Annual Campaign, as assigned.
  22. Works within the Wellness Department 40 hours a week and available for evening and weekend shifts.
  23. Responsible for other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent professional experience in health, wellness promotion, sport management, sales, communications, or business is required. YMCA experience and marketing experience is preferred.
  2. Must have excellent interpersonal, public relations and communication skills and experience, including the ability to make presentations and handle media inquiries.
  3. Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software.
  4. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  5. Proven track record of developing authentic relationships with others.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  7. Maintain current certifications CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, O2 and First Aid or be able to acquire within 90 days of hire.

  8. Must provide their own transportation to perform certain duties regularly.
