As an Advanced Project Engineer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:


  • Supporting 3M manufacturing facilities FTIR (and possible additional) analytical equipment

  • Work directly with 3M manufacturing facilities to support field sampling and analytical test plan support

  • Laboratory-based measurements of 3M products for emission factor development

  • Field measurements of the concentration of chemicals present in air, water, and solids as well the flow rates of air and water emitted from manufacturing processes

  • Leak testing of pipes, valves, tanks and flanges using a FLIR camera at manufacturing locations


  • Performing quantitative analysis test methods using gas-phase FTIR spectroscopy

  • Providing support water and waste reduction projects

  • Installing and operating FTIR (and possible additional) equipment at various manufacturing sites


  • Measurements of emission sources at 3M manufacturing facilities, review changes in manufacturing facility operations and work with 3M subject matter experts to identify any impacts on air emission permitting

  • Detailed laboratory reports, data sheets, and other documentation in accordance to U.S. EPA GLP’s and the ISO 17025 testing laboratory accreditation

  • Working with environmental regulatory, industrial hygiene and process engineering professionals to implement ideas and equipment in support of the company at various manufacturing sites

  • Develop standard sampling and analytical testing plans for facilities to collect environmental samples

Determining lab and field data to:

  • Evaluate manufacturing process and emission control system operational performance

  • Demonstrate emissions compliance

  • Support regulatory efforts and remediation goals

  • Support industrial hygiene-related worker exposure assessments and incident investigations

  • Support water and waste minimization efforts

  • Potential emissions (PTE) from 3M manufacturing equipment and operations to support compliance with air permits and regulations

  • Monitor manufacturing exhaust gas streams for regulatory, process improvement, and safety

Supporting work:

  • Work with other 3M subject matter experts to prepare plants for upcoming stack testing activities

  • Field testing to support manufacturing EHS and environmental remediation activities

  • Work with vendors and suppliers of testing equipment for installation at various manufacturing facilities

Company Vehicle

This position requires driving a company vehicle, which will require pre-employment and ongoing review of motor vehicle history for candidates who are offered and hired for this position.

Your Skills and Expertise To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution

  • Current, Valid Driver’s license is required, as you will be using a company vehicle for this position

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Master's degree or higher in a science discipline from an accredited institution

  • Ability to, on occasion, lift analytical equipment (30 lbs or more) during field testing

  • Wear respirator protective equipment (and other PPE) during some field tests

  • Experience with:

  • Field sampling using real-time analytical equipment and the collection of air and water samples for off-line chemical analysis.

  • Gas-phase Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)

  • Analysis of environmental samples using Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS; LC/MS)

  • Aerosol sampling using SMPS, CPC, and APS equipment

  • Sampling from manufacturing processes

  • Experience with Matlab, Visual Basic, LabView, and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)

  • Skills include:

  • Effective communications with plant manufacturing personnel, environmental permitting, industrial hygiene and safety personnel as well as state and federal regulatory personnel

  • Basic knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting, and compliance resolution

  • Adherence to safety practices at industrial manufacturing facilities.

Travel: May include up to 30% mostly domestic with potential for international
