This position assists in the supervision of staff, and the delivery of essential work products for the District 7 Traffic Office. The position provides engineering expertise to internal and external clients along with the delivery of engineering plans and documentation to ensure compliance with MnDOT standards and policies.

This position represents the District Traffic Office as a team member on assigned highway improvement projects, from concept through construction phases, so that temporary traffic controls, pavement markings, signs, traffic signals, lighting systems, and intelligent transportation systems are correctly designed and deployed.

Additionally, this position will lead the analysis, design and operation of the District’s traffic signal systems, roadway lighting systems and Intelligent Transportation Systems. Including, but not limited to the completion of traffic signal warrant analyses; signal timing; and signal coordination plans.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensure as a professional Civil Engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design (AELSLAGID). (If obtaining licensure through Comity, a temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.)

In addition to the preceding minimum qualifications, you will be assessed on the following if interviewed:

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with the public, businesses, elected officials and other governmental organizations.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely sufficient to give direction, facilitate meetings, make public presentations, and answer project specific and policy questions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Traffic Engineering Design and Analysis, highway project development and extensive public involvement.

  • Experience with signal timing and coordination plan creation and implementation.

Office:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use wrists, hands, and fingers to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Field:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work outside exposed to the weather elements (both cold and hot) occasionally. The employee will frequently drive a motor vehicle in varying weather conditions. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven/sloping ground. The employee may work in high-volume traffic zones in day- and night-time conditions. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, and squatting). The employee will operate a variety of technical equipment on an occasional basis (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee must frequently move up to 50 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
