This position provides overall direction and leadership for the District Bridge Operations section, including the management, inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement program for District 7’s 475+ bridges and structures. This position acts as the primary Bridge Program Administrator to ensure the bridge safety inspection program is conducted according to state and federal guidelines, reports are reviewed and approved as required and ensuring findings are addressed appropriately. This position develops and produces technical analyses and proposed solutions for bridge and structural maintenance situations, provides technical expertise and guidance for bridge maintenance priorities, and makes recommendations for the Bridge Replacement and Improvement 10-year Plan. This position supervises, develops and leads engineering, maintenance and inspection staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geosciences and Interior Design (AELSLAGID). (If obtaining licensure through Comity, a temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.)

  • Three (3) years post-registration engineering experience (Engineer Senior level or equivalent) that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of principles and practices of engineering. Engineering experience must include one or more of the following bridge or structure areas: scoping, inspection, design, construction, contract administration, project development, or maintenance.

  • Supervisory experience which includes providing oversight, work direction and evaluating staff

  • A valid Class D Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of bridge maintenance, repair practices, preservation and improvements

  • Knowledge of bridge safety inspection or Team Leader Certification

  • Knowledge of bridge design, capacity, specifications, or load ratings

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements and environmental conditions described in this section are representative of those that may be required of an employee to successfully perform the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for more than 2/3 of the work time using a computer and or telephone. Information is also communicated through writing and face-to-face conversations with clients and visitors. The employee uses wrists, hands, and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, color vision and eye/hand coordination.

Field - Must be able to perform all physical actions necessary to inspect bridges and structures including work at height, in an aerial access bucket, and in all seasons of the year and extremes of temperature. Must utilize personnel protective equipment appropriate to the activity being performed. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to drive to remote bridge locations and must be able to move safely about a bridge construction project or highway work zone.
