Tufts Medicine Medical Assistant - Family Practice in Malden, Massachusetts

Position Summary: Responsible for assisting the physician office(s) in a wide variety of specified duties under the direct supervision of the manager, provider and clinical staff.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Actively participates in huddles and/or other pre-visit planning activities.

  2. Responsible for rooming patients in a thorough, friendly and competent manner.

  3. Assists provider during patient examination. Prepares room for patient procedures, obtains specimens using proper media, prepares proper requisitions to accompany specimen collection, ensuring proper labeling and delivers specimen for proper pick up.

  4. As applicable, performs point of care (POC) testing in a competent manner. Seeks guidance from Lead MA, nurse or provider appropriately. Perform all the necessary quality control for all CLIA waived testing and document appropriately.

  5. Understands key drivers of medical practice success and models work in a way that supports those (e.g. patient access, wellness screening, chronic disease management, etc.)

  6. Acts as the patient's advocate in booking follow up specialist appointments and diagnostic services with the front desk staff.

  7. Assesses barriers to patient learning/understanding, communicates that information that to the provider as needed. If applicable, Instructs patients on how to do home treatments and/or testing (e.g. glucometer testing, nebulizer usage).documents all patient education in EMR.

  8. Responsible for stocking exam rooms according to provider preference. Orders clinical supplies in collaboration with the site leader. Maintains a neat and orderly work area (exam room, flow station, desk, etc.)

  9. Ensures that all clinical documents for scanning are done so in a timely manner by scanning them directly or forwarding them to the designated staff for scanning.

  10. If applicable, assists with nursing home visits and inpatient orders for providers.

  11. Makes rounds in the waiting room and in the exam rooms communicating wait times and providing any necessary service recovery measures.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assists with other functional aspects of the department, including clerical, scheduling/registration and answering telephones as needed.

  2. Must be willing and able to travel to other practice locations as needed.

  3. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

EDUCATION:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program required. Certified Nursing Assistant, Phlebotomist, or student with college courses in health sciences may be considered. Must attend an accredited program within 6 months of hire. Current certification in CPR required.

EXPERIENCE:

  1. 0-2 years experience in physician’s office or outpatient setting required.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  1. Able to work independently and must exhibit maturity and judgment as well as technical competence (phlebotomy, EKGs etc.) and and a working understanding of the key drivers of effective clinical practice (e.g. chronic disease management, wellness screening, etc.)

Working Conditions

Physical Environment:

  1. Frequent standing and walking, occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, carrying, sitting, kneeling, squatting, lifting and turning of patients. Exposure to infectious disease.

Manual Dexterity:

  1. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulations.

Audible/Visual Demands:

  1. Requires ability to see computer screen and reports. Requires the ability to hear physicians instructions and visually administer medications

Scope of Position Responsibilities

For Supervision:

  1. Not Applicable.

For Internal/External Relationships:

  1. Direct contact with several hospital departments, staff, private physicians, patients and the community.

Limits of Authority:

  1. Able to work independently within parameters of job description. Keeps Nurse manager or Director informed if problems arise.
