70% Development/Fundraising Support

In collaboration with the Dean and the KUEA Director for Development for the School of Music, develop and implement strategic fundraising plan for corporate, foundation, individual, and membership campaigns. Paramount is the expectation to support KUEA staff in efforts to identify, cultivate, and steward donors to the School of Music. To this end, the Director of External Affairs will make donor experiences between the School of Music and KU Endowment appear seamless, professional, and reassuring. Oversee annual giving programs: Friends of the School of Music, Dean’s Club. Responsible for KU Music’s One Day. One KU. fundraising efforts in addition to any LaunchKU fundraising campaigns. Oversee special/specific giving campaigns as needed (ex. Swarthout Renovation, Room naming campaigns, Castle Campaign for Opera.) Swarthout Take a Seat campaign is ongoing until all seats are sold. Scholarship stewardship-Ensure that scholarship donors receive annual acknowledgment letters from donors, recognition in application publications, and are invited to meet their students at the reception held prior to the annual Scholarship Concert. Identify and cultivate sponsors for major performances in order to increase marketing and engagement with donors and/or alums, bring in guest artist or otherwise enhance the event for the school. Handle all proposals and materials needed as part of seeking sponsors. Collaborate with the Dean and KU Endowment staff with proposal writing, donor communications, annual giving coordination, development of donor collateral and giving opportunities. Arrange and coordinate donor visits to the School of Music and meet with donors and committees as needed.

10% Alumni Relations

Serve on behalf of the Dean as the principal communications liaison with music alumni, including those with degrees in disciplines other than music but who participated in ensembles and other musical endeavors at KU. Responsibilities will include supporting discreet alumni groups with the School of Music (e.g., Band Alumni Association). Serve as the principal liaison for the School of Music with the KU Alumni Association.

10% Special Events

In consultation with the Dean and the KUEA Director for Development for the School of Music, plan and produce public relations events promoting the image of the School of Music on and off campus, and among the various constituencies of the School, University, and general public at large. Work closely with faculty and students participating in special events. Coordinate with other entities on campus with regard to prescribed policies and procedures.

10% Special Projects

Assisting the Dean, facilitate special projects involving the School of Music. As a member of the dean’s staff, this position may be called upon to assist with other priorities of the dean and the dean’s office. This position includes expectations to assist, as needed, in facilitating the successful operation of the dean’s office, including tasks beyond other duties outlined in this description.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or three years work experience in public relations

  2. Experience dealing with multiple deadlines and competing priorities as evidenced by the application materials

  3. Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by the application materials.

Position Overview:

This position (Advancement Coordinator) is responsible to promote the general image and well being of the School of Music through development/fundraising support, alumni relations, special events, and special projects. Reporting to the Dean of the School, the successful candidate will work closely with the following: KU Endowment Director of Development for the School of Music, the Friends of Music (primary external support group for the School), faculty and professional staff in the School, and other individuals and/or entities identified by the dean. The successful candidate will be called upon to engage both collaboratively and independently, and be flexible and creative in pursuing opportunities that are not always clearly defined. There will be expectations for some work duties outside of the normal business day (donor or other special events). As a member of the dean’s staff, this position may be called upon to assist with other priorities of the dean and the dean’s office. This position includes expectations to assist, as needed, in facilitating the successful operation of the dean’s office, including tasks beyond other duties outlined in this description.

Partnering with KU Endowment Association

Paramount is the expectation to support KUEA staff in efforts to identify, cultivate, and steward donors to the School of Music. To this end, the Advancement Coordinator will make donor experiences between the School of Music and KU Endowment appear seamless, professional, and reassuring. In coordinating development events on behalf of the dean, the successful candidate will consult and collaborate with KU Endowment staff members who lead fundraising efforts for the School of Music. Candidate will assist the Dean and KU Endowment staff with proposal writing, event planning and execution, donor communications, Dean’s Club coordination, development of donor collateral and giving opportunities, and assist KU Endowment staff with donor visits to the School of Music, and with the Dean and individual faculty members.

Although this position is advertised as full-time (1.0 FTE), exceptional candidates desiring a three-quarter time appointment (0.75 FTE) will be considered.
