Position Title: Academic Advisor, Center for University Advising School/Division: Advisement Full Time/Part Time: Full-Time Description: Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean, the Academic Advisor is a member of the Center for University Advising, which is responsible for non-major academic advising for all undergraduate students from orientation through graduation. This is an on-site position; work for this role will be performed on campus. This position may require occasional evening and weekend work. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Serves as advisor to an assigned group of students across all class years, from the point of entry through graduation. Provides accurate information about academic policies, programs, and options. Assists students in the development of a meaningful educational plan. Supports students by helping them to identify and assess alternatives and the impact of their decisions on their educational plans. Assists students who are experiencing academic difficulty or are at risk of departure. Supports students as they transition into and out of college, develop greater responsibility for their educational goals, and evaluate their academic options. Proactively maintains contact with advisees and provides continuity throughout their time at Hofstra University. Collaborates with Center for University Advising's retention outreach staff in monitoring the academic progress of advisees and communicating with faculty as appropriate. Develops strong relationships with campus partners in assigned academic departments and university offices. Supports the programming efforts of the Center for University Advising. Serves as an informed resource for students to make appropriate referrals to other university resources, including academic departments, Student Health and Counseling Services, the Center for Career Design and Development, Student Access Services, and the Center for Academic Excellence. Develops strong capability in using the Education Advisory Board's ( EAB ) retention software, Navigate, for maintaining accurate electronic records on students. Assists in the implementation of group advising programs to promote the mission and goals of the Center for University Advising. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required. At least one year of full-time experience in advising, counseling, or related fields in a higher education setting or equivalent combination of education and experience. An established record of accomplishment promoting student development programs and building positive relationships that cultivate comprehensive student-centered organization. Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities, perform highly detailed work, in a deadline driven environment. Excellent interpersonal, human relations, teaching/presenting, and problem-solving skills. A collaborative disposition and possess the ability to think both critically and strategically. Strong quantitative and analytical skills and have comfort with appropriate technologies including social media. Have a passion for and experience working with students, families, and colleagues of diverse backgrounds.
