State of Minnesota Land Survey Tech -Transportation Generalist/Senior in Golden Valley, Minnesota

Job Summary Job Summary A Transportation Generalist Senior performs the following types of work at intermediate level. Examples of work for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to: * Performs as survey lead worker in absence of the crew lead. * Sets up and operates global positioning systems, including real time kinematic global position systems, total station, or ground based lidar instruments. * Assists survey lead in construction survey office activities, including setup and checking of staking notes. * Performs set-up, calibration, use and maintenance of survey equipment. * Assists survey lead in field construction by recovering or establishing horizontal and vertical control, setting and marking stakes, and pounding hubs or setting right of way monuments. * Assists with investigation and location of lot corners, property monuments, section corners and taking reference ties. * Communicates with contractors, landowners, consultants and supervisors to report progress or review work assignment. * Performs other duties as assigned. Function: Snow & Ice Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols. A Transportation Generalist performs the following types of work at basic level. Examples of work for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to: * Sets up real time kinematic global position systems or total station. * Assists survey lead in construction survey office activities. * Performs set-up, calibration, use and maintenance of survey equipment. * Assists survey lead in field construction by creating and/or checking survey notes, recovering or establishing horizontal and vertical control, setting and marking stakes, and pounding hubs or setting right of way. * Sets up and operates global positioning systems. * Assists with investigation and location of lot corners, monuments and section corners. * Communicates with contractors, landowners, consultants and supervisors to report progress or review work assignment. * Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications The level of experience to perform this job at the TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST SENIOR level can be achieved with: * Two years performing survey (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys, etc.), mapping or related activities. OR * One year of experience performing survey (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys, etc.), mapping or related activities; PLUS one year experience in soils, traffic, construction, design, pre-design, hydraulics, permits, right of way, surveys, etc. * A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying/Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year experience noted above (in order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts). * Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two- way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records. IF THE POSITION IS NOT FILLED AT THE TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST SENIOR LEVEL, THEY MAY BE FILLED AT THE TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST LEVEL BY UTILIZING THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS. * The level of experience to perform this job at the *TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST level can be achieved with: * Six months of experience performing survey (e.g., land, location, and construction surveys, etc.), mapping, geodetic or related activities and a combination of six months experience in road maintenance, construction, materials/soils, permits, etc.; OR * A two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts). * Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records. Both the Transportation Generalist Senior and Transportation Generalist levels require a valid Class D Driver’s License with no major traffic convictions in the past 5 years AND the ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver - Class B license with no air brake restrictions and tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire (training will be provided). This job also may require walking, moving, standing, to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job may require strenuous physical labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.
